"Newpowersoul" did come up in this thread, so I thought I'd defend it.
I don't think its quite as bad as people have said since 1998. At least half the album is decent - the hidden track "Wasted kisses" is probably the best track (ironically). "Come On" and "The One" are better than other singles released at the time. (Compare it to "The holy river", "betcha by golly wow" etc.) "Shoo-be doo" and the title track definitely grows on you. "Push it up" and "Mad Sex" are fun songs, even if they are "so bad they are good". I think NPS came at the right time. Emancipation didn't have enough attitude & funk, but NPS was in some ways a return to Prince's roots. The "Come On" video was budget but very funny - showcasing Prince's tongue-in-cheek humour. Overall I wouldn't call NPS a turkey. I'd give it at least **1/2 out of 5 which is more than I can say for most albums today. At least you can dance (or do whatever) do NPS. It has a lot of energy, some catchy melody hooks and a few clever lyrics. It's still a whole lot better than "n.e.w.s.", "the vault", "The Rainbow Children", "Rave un2 the joy fantastic" (Prince's most desperate moment) and it craps on most of the internet-only releases such as "Xpectation" and "One nite alone (piano and voice)". If you hate NPS give it another listen. And I agree C&D is not bad either. | |

The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
