Prince did well last year because of the hits. PERIOD! That's basically true. Songs like Musicology & Call My Name weren't hits at all, and wouldn't have drawn anywhere near as many fans to concerts. It was the big concerts of hits that most ppl hadn't seen him perform for years that sealed the deal for him. The point is this: 1. No matter what, Prince will never, ever have anymore album that were ever as great as Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, All Around The World In A Day, Parade, or Sign 'O' The Times. Why? Because those kinds of album can only happen once in a lifetime & there is no way in hell that we can ask a 46 year old man to act like he's still in his 20's!!!! 2. Some of us miss the 1980's too much because this (along with the 1970's) were the very last time in music history that any artist(s) try to make music that really matters enough to stand the time of time. The early 1990's were interesting as first (90-93). But sometime after, somethings went dead wrong (read: gangsta-style rap, grunge, too much music sample, no more love songs, negativity/n***ativity, rap-metal turn stupid, bling-bling, the slow death of true hip-hop culture, the slow death of funk, RIAA hating on the internet, lip-synching at "live" shows, laptop sequencers doing too much of the hard work at "live" shows, Ashlee Simpson, American & Pop Idol, etc. etc. etc.). 3. Some of us are giving old & we don't want to say it. But it's true. And we're starting to sound too much like our parents/grandparents.

A couple of thoughts:
1. People like what they like. Simple as that. I've had many a disagreement with EWM and Vainandy. It's not because I think that they aren't entitled to their preferences. It's just that sometimes I don't agree with their reasoning for their preferences. Meaning, EWM thinks Prince has lost it since 1995 and that he needs to make hardcore industrial music that is angry. However, everyone is entitled to enjoy and hate whatever they want to. Even if you think that they are being ridiculous. It just bugs me when people start stating there opinion as FACT. 2. No one plays sold out arena tours based on their NEW MUSIC. No one. No one is going to U2 without the hopes of hearing some Joshua Tree etc. [Edited 3/14/05 16:44pm] "New Power slide...." |

actually the whole terminology of "hater" in reference to not liking certain aspects of prince has always been used in an erroneous context 'round here and within the fanbase itself. to "hate" on someone is basically to be jealous of them, of what they do and whatever they may have. in all my 10 years of being in the prince fan community i have never seen anybody be jealous of p's work. i've seen tons of people who are dissatisfied with what he's done at various points, but never jealous. the term people should perhaps be usin is dissatisfied.
