Why can't some fans just let go? I am really curious to know why some fans just won't let Prince be Prince. I'll admit I really love alot of his older work as much as the next fan and I wish I was old enough back then to experience the concerts and the excitment to a new Prince record/movies coming out but I can't belive how much hate his newer music gets. I think alot of fans just identify with that time with what was going on in their lives at that time and they just want that feeling again. I just want Prince to be Prince and put out whatever he wants to. I think it would be kinda pathetic really if Prince was recycling the same sound and gimicks over and over again. If you want to relive the eighties or early ninties put on the Gett Off single or watch Purple Rain again. We should all just appreciate that Prince is still sharing his music with us and wants to entertain us. If alot of you would give the new stuff a chance and have an open mind I am sure you find the same creativity in the newer stuff as in the older stuff. The only thing I wish Prince would loosen up on would be the swearing and the sexuality. Oh and his preacheiness. But I guess that is where he is in his life now so that will be reflective in his art. But I would still like to see him simulate masterbation with his guitar again.

That would be a great theory was it not for the fact that many fans like the older stuff, but weren't fans, or were too young, or not even alive at the time it was released. Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......

Oh boy, here we go.
I hate when people assume we're just "closing our minds" when it comes to Prince's new music. Many of us have been disappointed for years. Little by little, Prince has worn us out with ridiculous behavior, tame shows, weak music, and Larry Graham. We've tried to keep open minds when it came to Prince, but most things seem to go to shit. So why do we hang around? Well, because: 1. We're still fans of his old stuff. 2. Once in a while, Prince will do something cool to keep our attention. 3. We're always hoping Prince gets his shit together and makes a REAL comeback. I don't mean to speak for everyone, but I believe this is how many of us feel. Haters are annoyed and roll thier eyes when klhk is paid a compliment. ask yourself, are u a hater?

Sorry, Evil i for one do not feel like that. Prince never disappoints those who have no expectations. Larry Graham is a funky bass man and i would feel privileged to hear and watch him play. If we learn not to meddle in Prince's private affairs we would make no judgments about his 'ridiculous behavior.' Let's just appreciate the man for the music. Prince is a prolific artist reaching many people with different lives and realities. How does one determine what makes a 'comeback' REAL? Look at the number of people he's reaching not only with music but with a message. I can't let go because Prince plays the funkiest music in the universe. He connects the spiritual with the material world. Let's make a FUSS!!!

I would love to agree however Prince has on many occasions mixed his private and personal beliefs and life with the public. I'd love to have the chance to appreciate him purely for his music without all of the other distractions he's bought along the way.

The hating is really nothing new. There were people that had problems with Purple Rain when it came out. They thought it was too pop and longed for the funk of his earlier stuff. Don't even get me started on ATWIAD and Parade. Many were convinced he had lost it at that point. I'm sure some of you newer fans will be doing some dissing if Prince is still putting out music in 2015. CALL ME A DREAMER 2!

Even tho Prince might be making a point of one kind or another it's up to the individual to choose their focus. Without the passion for his convictions, we might not have all that intense funk. I don't think it comes one without the other.

Remember the days of "Uptown" when everyone was free to have their own opinions and be who they want to be ? Those days were as funky as hell, in fact most would argue funkier. It is possible to have passion and conviction without forcing it down the throats of your (musical) fans.

I guess that's one of the reasons i'm excited about the new tune with Stevie Wonder. They're talking about a broader approach, at least lyrically the song is. It's saying: Shame on Everyone!!! Maybe we can still be who we want to be and be free when all are living right.

As fan of 20+ years, I'm strange in that I like the last 10 years the most. But as far as the old stuff goes. After hearing it, it still moves us and never gets old. So my question is this: who would want 2 let go of that? Listen to me on The House of Pop Culture podcast on itunes http://itunes.apple.com/u...d438631917

I'm going with Krystal. Most of you only like Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, and SOTT. I think that the fact that his music changes as he gets older is really cool. Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

See that's something there that always gets me - "hating" Why is expressing an opinion that disagrees with something Prince as done referred to as "hating" and the person that expresses and opinion a "hater" ? Always seems a touch one-sided to me

actually the whole terminology of "hater" in reference to not liking certain aspects of prince has always been used in an erroneous context 'round here and within the fanbase itself. to "hate" on someone is basically to be jealous of them, of what they do and whatever they may have. in all my 10 years of being in the prince fan community i have never seen anybody be jealous of p's work. i've seen tons of people who are dissatisfied with what he's done at various points, but never jealous. the term people should perhaps be usin is dissatisfied.

Who's to say everyone hates his new music? The Gold Experience is his best cd, in my opinion, with Emancipation and Chaos and Disorder not too far behind.

Prince has been around since 1978. He's practically the only old schooler left that has continuously made new music almost every single year.
Prince was first very well known in the R&B world. Then he picked some pop fans with "Little Red Corvette". In 1984, he totally blew up in not only the R&B world but the pop world also with "Purple Rain". At the height of his career, he drastically changed his style. Fans from both sides of the fence were pissed. Tons of them left and some of them stayed. He even gained new fans that preferred his new style, especially overseas. When the 1990s came around, Prince blew up again with "Diamonds and Pearls". This album picked Prince up some younger listeners. It also had traces of hip hop on it which Prince continued throughout the 1990s. A lot of Prince's younger fans were loving the hip hop and a lot of his old fans were hating it, even the late 1980s ones that he picked up after "Purple Rain". Then, after all that, Prince becomes a Jehovah's Witness. This move pissed a lot of the old fans, the late 1980s fans, and the younger 1990s fans off. Who knows, maybe now he's picked up some new Jehovah's Witness fans. Prince has been around so long and is so diverse that he is going to have fans that are not happy with particular albums. Prince has fans of every race from every country, social class, and age. When you put all these different people together that have different tastes, you are never going to have everyone pleased with his work. Prince is who he is...an individual. We, his fans, are individuals too. We have our own tastes, dislikes, and a life just like he does. Anyone that totally agrees with every style change, business decision, or change of faith that Prince has had throughout his entire career, is an obsessed "fam". Prince has had tons of fans to "let go" throughout the years. I don't think he wants us to "let go". If we did, Prince would never be able to change up as he has done and have people to continuously buy it. Andy is a four letter word.
