Not necessarily. It also drove away the majority of his original R&B fan base that were loyal fans from the very beginning. Just because they weren't into this weird trip, doesn't make them any less of true fans than the ones he picked up afterwards.

Not all of his R&B fans listen to only R&B music. For You, Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 are not strictly R&B albums. Their are elements of acoustic, rock, new wave and funk in those albums. Prince was fusing different styles in his music before Purple Rain and ATWIAD. ATWIAD was something Prince wanted to do and GROW as an artist IMO.

Of course not all of his R&B fans listened to only R&B music and of course Prince had more styles of music on the earlier albums besides just R&B. That's one of the things that set him aside from the other R&B acts at the time and, in some ways, made his music stronger. They were very strong albums and also were very competitive to other R&B at the time. They could have been competitive to pop/rock also at the time but it takes the pop world a little longer to catch up, especially when it comes to a black artist.

Changing the game at the height of his career is just plain rediculous and the timing of it, when he had just gained mass pop appeal, was a slap in the face to the R&B world that had supported him from the beginning. There was plenty of time to "grow" in later years to come.

Since ATWIAD was Prince's 7th released album at the time, I would hardly call that a slap in the face. If that's the case, I'm sure glad he slapped me. biggrin

It may have been his seventh album but his previous album, "Purple Rain", was his first big pop success, with the exception of "Little Red Corvette". In regards to his R&B fans, I would say "Around The World In A Day" was a slap in the face. A lot of people saw it as "I've got the pop audience now, I don't need you anymore". But, in reality, that new pop audience wasn't liking it either.

I have to wonder who you are presuming to speak for here. There are many "ol' school R&B" fans as well as "new pop audience" fans on this board who love this record. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind about this record, but I do hate it when people put their own opinion forward as "this is what everyone thinks/feels". I was one of the former ("ol' school R&B" fans) who was with Prince from the start, but I loved, loved ATWIAD when it was released. It was challenging and different and exciting, and in no way disapointing. And many of my friends at the time, "the new pop audience", loved it as well and also found it challenging and exciting. Together we would sit and listen to ATWIAD over and over and over again. So hold your opinion as your own and don't presume to speak for no-one else!!

Notice the highlighted parts. "On this board" are the key words. This is a Prince fan web site and all of us here have remained Prince fans throughout the years or we wouldn't be here today. As far as the rest of the world, yes the majority, key word being "majority", of the old R&B fans hated this album. Maybe you liked it when it came out but you are one of the exceptions. Never at any time did I say "all" the old R&B fans hated it.

You mentioned that you and many of your friends "the new pop audience" loved it as well. You also proved my point. Most of the old R&B fans and the new pop audience hated it (notice I didn't say "all") but the pop audience would definately give it more of a chance than the old R&B audience would.

As far as me speaking for everyone else, you need to read more carefully and there are tons of ex-fans out there that are not "on this board".

among other things, i just feel lucky to have a parent who taught me so much about good music and encouraged me to look beyond the mainstream for interesting stuff. nod
