I read somewhere that it sold something like 10 Million copies in the U.S and 17 Million copies world wide but i dont know how true that is. help me out here

'Purple Rain,' the film:
Total gross: $68,392,977
Opened July 27th, 1984
Topped the weekend box-office chart for one weekend, interrupting Ghostbusters' stay at no. 1
Currently the no.543 film of all time in North America
(info courtesy box office mojo: http://boxofficemojo.com/...erain.htm)

'Purple Rain,' the album:
Certified 13x Platinum, for shipments of more than 13 million copies (last certified in 1996---it's probably due another million or two by now)
Spent 24 consecutive weeks at no.1 on the Billboard Album chart. No album has remained at no.1 for as long since.
Produced 5 top 40 hits, 4 of which hit the top ten, and two of those made it to no.1
