What Prince songs do you think should have charted better and why didn't they?

Call My Name- reasons
1.Prince's air time is limited partly due to his age

2.At no point in the song does he talk about getting crunk
and then beating you down.

3.There are no rappers on it.

Space-reasons
1.no REAL video to help promote it

2. People thought that Prince was crazy for
changing his name

3.The Come album didn't have much protion for it

Do Me,Baby-reasons

1.Prince wasn't a mega star yet

2.the lyrics and vocal were too much for that time

3.no promo video

I was always surprised that the Diamonds & Pearls singles didnt do a bit better...he was really popular, promotion was high...I suppose they all made top 10

The biggest Shock has got to be Batdance..not that its a good track its just Batman and everything associated with it was huge - and it was kept at number 2 by that crap "Join me dancin' naked in the rain" tripe

In recent history: Musicology, Call My Name, and Cinnamon Girl.

Singles often coast along on hype, regardless of quality (and these were good!) The songs did fairly well, but considering the Prince-explosion that happened last year, I'd thought they would have done better.

Less recent: If I Was Your Girlfriend.

A beautiful song, but I think the lyrics kinda scared off the casual fans and mainstream audience. It was easily misinterpreted, which is part of the beauty of the song, but it was also it's downfall.

The One, Right Back Here In My Arms, I Hate U, Days Of Wild, Get Wild had a lot of potential.

Kiss should've reached number 1 here in the UK.. that single was huge - and still is a popular song! If I remember correctly it stayed in the top 10 for a while 2 - does anyone know what beat it to number 1? Also.. what was Prince's highest chart position with a single last year in the US and what song was it with???

Forget Sexy MF, this was Prince's boldest single ever!

nod I think so too.

It took balls to come out with a song like that as a single.

GottaLetitgo

These are the underperformers I least understand:

1) Gold-great song; first time I heard it on the radio the DJ said that Prince was back to Purple Rain form and that the song would be a huge hit. That was a bit much and said radio station stopped playing it like 3 weeks later but in my mind it was a great pop song that should have be released as first single.

2) Letitgo- Victim of Prince-Warners war. First single that should have been first single but promotion was nil from the get-go.

3) Call My Name- How radio could have been up Usher's ass and not given this song a chance I will never know. There should have been more promotion from the record company. A couple of R and B radio stations are still playing the damn thing.

4) New Power Generation- Not the best song on the album but a pretty decent second single. There was some sort of glitch with the commercial single release affecting its chart position because the airplay numbers were pretty good the first few weeks. The song couldn't chart at the time until the commercial single was released and radio stopped playing it.

5) Anotherloverholenyohead-Always thought it sounded great on the radio but I wonder how much the jackass title affected the song's chart performance. Mountains peaked at 22, Under the Cherry Moon was trashed and this song never had a chance.

God, so many more...probably have to post again after I think of them.
All good things they say never last...

Come On-reasons
1. Ameturish video
2.Ameturish album cover
3.People still thought that TAFKAP was crazy.

Snap

"When You Were Mine" -- reason it didn't chart well is because it wasn't released. damn, it would've done as well as "I Wanna Be Your Lover"

***"Let's Pretend We're Married"---it was released as the fourth single from '1999' but it didn't do very well. It's one of the strongest tracks on the album.

***"Take Me With U"---it was the fifth single from 'Purple Rain',but I don't think it even reached the Top 10.That was a shock, considering how "hot" Prince was in 1985.Let's blame it on Apollonia's off-key vocals, lol.

***"Anotherloverholenyohead"---an obvious choice for a single.I think it bombed because of the less-than-favorable reviews that 'UTCM' was getting?

***"I Wish U Heaven"---nice little song with a brilliant video. Can't understand why radio ignored it.

The Greatest Romance Ever Sold

This was a great song that never got any airplay or video play. It could have easily been a top 10 hit but i think people were still turned off by the name change

Mountains and Anotherloverholeinyohead. from Parade.

After Kiss was a number 1 smash (here in the states), they actually picked good follow up singles. Mountains was a minor hit as it peaked at #22 and Another lover got very little attention peaking at #63. I imagine the movie flopping at the box office didnt help . too bad these are two great songs

What song held Kiss/Prince of the number one spot???
I think it was either Cliff Richard featuring the young ones - Living doll, or George Michael - A different corner.

The Greatest Romance!, Eye Hate You, Letitgo- low airplay and the prince fiasco

Cinnamon Girl- too pop/rock for R&B stations, and low video play

Call My Name- did okay, should have gotten more play, but hey its a ballad shrug

and a bunch of other GREAT songs listed like Eye Wish You Heaven,
Joy in Repitition, Mountains etc. etc. etc.
If you will, so will I

One that always come to my mind is Partyman -- after Batdance was a huge hit, the first Batman movie was huge, and Partyman just seemed like a great radio-friendly single. The video was cool and kooky, too. It just seemed to fizzle -- don't know where it topped-out, but it wasn't nearly as high as I thought it would be.
