ORG EXCLUSIVE: Q & A session with The Electrifying Mojo(post your questions here!)

Well, thanks to WALLYSAFFORD, I got in touch with the Electrifying Mojo and he would be glad to answer our questions...

So...We thought that it would be best if I started this thread and you can post your questions or comments here.

Then we will pass them on to Mojo ....

[hi dahlings, Dansa here--this is an great opportunity for you guys to ask questions or give props to mojo, ESPECIALLY you motor babies out there! if you don't know who the electrifying mojo is, check out this thread for a bit more background and some testifying from fellow orgers. okay...the only rules for this are:

1) NO SILLY STUFF, and please present yourself in a respectful manner. any and all off-topic/disrespectful questions and/or commentary will be snipped with the quickness, so don't even try it.

2) try and keep the number of questions you ask at a minimum (i.e. don't ask 10 zillion questions on one post).

i'ma keep this goin for a bit, so think of some really good questions you wish to ask. the deadline for questions/comments is friday, march 18th at midnight (central time). MidnightFunk and i will then pick 20 questions out of the thread and forward them to mojo, and we will post his answers here on the m & m forum.

a thanx to those of you who will be participating, and a very very special thank you to mojo for takin the time to answer our questions and to wallysafford for hookin us up!]

This is all I really want to know anyway:

Has he heard about Sirius Satellite Radio? If so, has he considered that as a viable way for a triumphant return to the airwaves?

What ever happened to my Midnight Funk Association Membership Card, I didn't get it, and I really do still want it! biggrin

Kisses to Wallysafford and Big kisses to you MidnightFunk! And Kudos to The Org, for allowing us the space and opportunity to show our love for the one and only Electrifying Mojo!!

Question for Mojo:

What really happened at 98.3 (Tower 98) in Monroe, MI when you dj'd there in 89-90. All of the sudden you were missing from the radio, with no explaination. A radio manager at that time said that you were causing trouble. Is that the truth, or was it that they didn't like your non-conformity?

And make sure that Mojo gets a ton of thanks for making radio great (at one time).

Prince has long been in favor of "real music/real musicians" etc. What are Mojo's thoughts on how much of hip hop is contrary to this school of thought?

What is Mojo's favorite Prince album/song/concert?

What does Mojo make of the whole Michael Jackson situation???

I want to say first that I been a fan of yours since you were on WGPR back in the eighties.
My questions are:
How do you think Prince can increase his airplay?
Is he forever destined for the oldies and R&B stations because of his age and race or for his independence from major labels?

Back when Prince first hit the scene, Mojo was the Detroit Radio DJ who played ALL of his music, and created one of Prince's biggest fan bases.

Do you feel the positive reviews for his Musicology album were warranted, or do you think it was overrated by the media?

Do you feel Prince's creative slide in the 90's is anywhere near as bad as some people make it out to be?

I don't have any questions for Mojo. I just want to say thank you. Thank you for educating me from the age of 9 on Good Music. I want to shake his hand.

When Mojo emailed me, he knew he was getting questions from Prince.org

and

he said...

"I haven't spoken to Prince in while but I am sure I can give you guys at Prince.org a few tidbits."

so.. I think he fully understands he will get quite a few prince ?'s

but..maybe when we post his questions, we could start a thread where Orgers can
just say "Thanks" and I will tell Mojo he should go read it..

cause I know that 4 most of u it's VERY important to just say "Thank You"

I dont really know who he is, but read other thread saying who he is so here we go.

I'd like to know his take on the state of radio today, the FCC, and any thoughts on howard sterns move to sat radio and any impact that will have on radio itself. And how much fun was it playing what ever the hell prince tunes you got your hands on back in the day and playing them offlist any time you felt like it, I actually always dreamed I could've done that myself. Thanks.

Hi Mojo, I have followed you thru the '80's.
What inspired you to create the Electifying Mojo persona that made you famous thru you career. You were always mysterious and never we never seen your face.

I remember my brother winning a bandana and club card from your show and the pic only had you sunglasses and partial face shown. Pretty cool advertisement work.

Well, this is a Prince website. Unless we are/were from Detroit would most of us know about Mojo if not for the Prince connection???? It's like going to a Michael Jordan fan website and telling them you are going to interview MJ's cousin and need some questions. But don't ask TOO MANY questions about MJ. So what are we supposed to ask Mojo besides Prince stuff?

"mojo, how did you get started in radio?"
"Mojo, what is you favorite color?"

No offense, but the only reason I am interested in Mojo is because of the Prince thing. Other than that, I can pretend to be really be knowledgable about the Detroit Music scene, but I am just not.

Do you still have any contact today with Prince when he comes to Detroit for concerts?
I know that he is still tight with Billy Sparks. (Prince should have made you the act announcer for Purple Rain).

Yes, please loosen up on the reigns Dansa.
I'm sure at the end of the month there will be only select questions going to Mojo and not everyone will get an answere.

1 Complaint:

Mojo you made me late for school a lot of mornings staying up late listening to your show!

But I Thank U for that...!!!....One of my fondest memories of your show is when Prince called you on the phone, you recorded it and played it on the air for us one night at the end of your show. It's when he played When Doves Cry on the phone for U way before it came out.

My Complaint was a joke. I loved you and your show immensely, you were the best thing that ever happened to Detroit, Thank U. and Thank you for giving us "PRINCE"

P.S. The day that Purple Rain came out you said that the first person who met you in front of the studio would get a copy; around midnight I was waiting downtown at the main Bus terminal with my headphones on, as soon as you said that I ran over to the studio and was the first one to meet you, but I already had a Purple Rain album in my hand and you asked me if I was willing to trade the album back for someone who didn't have it yet for a "Wamme cloth". I accepted and went on my way-little did I know I switched album's, mine had the group poster in it - the one you gave didn't so I was upset when I got home and found out. Since then I've purchased about 10 Purple Rain albums, LOL.

Love you Mojo God Bless!
love you baby but not like my guitar

first off THANKS MOJO! for the education, its midnite and my porch lite
is on!

my question is:

Mojo do you think there is any current Dj's in today's radio that take
the chances that you did back in the day.(not conforming to playlist,
The Mothership, supporting an artist that you believe in, oh and those
battles lets not forget those amazing battles)

MOJO:

I got to talking to my other friends who grew up listening to you. I can still here certain playlist and song orders you did to this day. It actually inspired me to backtrack and find music you played back then especially that
version of "Out Come The Freaks" by Was Not Was. I just wanted to thank you for not only boosting my love for Prince, but for setting the example that it's cool to like other types of music, especiall if you're black. Because of you, I have yearning still for different types of music. You left a great legacy.

My question:
Music definitely isn't as good as it was in the 70's and most of the 80's. If you were on the air today, in Detroit...could you do the same type of program with what's out there today?

I want to know what does Mojo stand for

Also RB had a unity, a "fight the powers that be" feeling. I think RB music an Black radio back in the day united the community. Do you think Hip Hop/ Rap music has that same affect on the community?

And thank you for being a beacon of light, literally. I am originally from the "Glass City" and in Toledo in order to pull in Detroit stations, we used to hook up our stereo attenenas to the huge TV antenna that were mounted to your rooftop (you could change directions of the antenna with that box with the dial inside your house. lol)
On stormy nights, if I pointed the roof antenna toward the North east, I could get WJLB! smile
