idea Instead of buying the book why didn't you just get it from the library
like I did, and then purchase it if you like it?

That's a sin and a shame. I can't believe that. You can't get check something out for free anywhere there?? Why?

On the title of Alex's book, and how he should/could feel: What's the problem? There was a rise and a (big) fall. P is in the public eye again, but is it really a rise when the attention is coming as a result of stuff he put out 20 years ago? Even at the Golden Globes, when they introduced him, it was to something from the Purple Rain days - "When Doves Cry," I think. Though it wasn't the intent, I'm sure, that's insulting. Don't tell me all those people who went to the Musicology tour didn't know a new CD -- with new music -- existed when they all got one for free. Maybe mainstream folks just don't dig the new stuff. For me, a true rise will come when the public is again caring about what he's doing with his music now, not reliving the good ol'days, waiting for Purple Rain II or waiting to hear another arrangement of one of his classics.

Me too! He seemed to spend the whole book post PR trying as hard as he could to prove that his title made sense--that there was a fall.

The book makes a serious case that there was a fall, and there was. Anyone who feels that his post 80s career was as strong, vital and important as his time pre-88 career isn't looking at his career honestly. Every entertainer has highs and lows. When the book was written, Prince was at a low. Some of his albums weren't even selling over a few hundred thousand copies. That is a drop in his popularity. Hahn, wrote a flawed book, but there are parts of it very much worth reading for the insight. He interviewed alot of people around Prince, many of them speaking on the record for the first time, and while some of the stories may not be pretty, many of them are real.

Possessed, The Rise and Fall of Prince, was a title that was created to get some attention, but it was written before Musicology came out, and Prince was in a serious career hole.

I can guarentee that Hahn is a Prince fan and is probably very happy that Prince is getting some good press and attention lately. I've written this before but it was Alex Hahn who singlehandedly saved UPTOWN magazine by defending UPTOWN in their suit that was filed by Prince. He did it for free and caused Prince to drop his lawsuit. If it weren't for fans like Alex, there would have been no VAULT, no DAYS OF WILD and no more UPTOWN. Also, Prince would have probably continued the lawsuits and there might not have even been a Prince.org.

Give the guy some slack. People don't write books about Prince to get rich, they do it because they have a story to tell. These types of books rarely make anyone rich and require alot of work and dedication. Go to your library and read it. If they don't have a copy, ask them to buy one. It is worth your time.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Im with the rest of them Alex Hahn seems to be a right dick whenever ive seen him on the telly.
I remember Chuck D even commented on the title of the book over at his web-site.

I guess this thread also answers my question...http://www.prince.org/msg/7/136261

Though I must say...
I agree that you do not get rich writing/researching such tomes and anything a human contributes to any body of work...will be biased. It is in our nature. I look forward to reading all and any books about the Man. As I do, I will be able to form a better informed (probably biased by others perspective) and whole perspective of my man Prince (see some of us even refer to him as though we own him). I am sure also, that over time my perspective will be shaped by what I read or hear. I am crazy about him and his music and that will never change. To deny he is human and or has never had a FALL or other human events, well it just seems unreasonable. More importantly, given these human events, don't you think he is the better for them? I have never seen him look happier...overcoming tragedy and tough times can make you a better person. It seems to me...this may have happened for Prince.
Unfortunately, unless we were each to sit with Prince and have a face to face conversation or he were to ever write is own "tell-all", we do have to form our own opinions based on information provided, from others. I do know that not much I read will change my opinion of who and what I think he is; a complex and intriguing artist who also happens to look damn good for his age! biggrin My twocents! LOL
