"Dominant guitar force in music"??
Obviously you don't know anything about guitar players and guitar music in general to claim something as idiotic as this...

Neversin, don't bother. There will be posts and posts of fanrants trying to rationalize prince into guitar greatness. They don't know and ignorance is bliss for most. Different people are moved by different things and some people don't know how to seperate what they like from what really is.
I don't like Malmsteen, but I would never sit here and call him a lame guitarist because he's not. He prefers to play shit that I have no interest in hearing. That in and of itself does not have any bearing whatsoever on his abilities. Some people around here don't see things the same way.

I don't have to go by what anyone else says... I don't need to rationalize anything... I go by my ears and what my fingers play.

You have your opinion and I have mine. As a guitarist myself... I don't know what your missing, it's all right there in his performance.

There are many different types of guitarists, and everyone has their favorites, but Prince is on a level all his own, regardless of those who think he isn't.

Steve Vai's my favorite guitarist and one of my favorite musicians. I love his records. He can do things on the guitar that Prince is too smart to even try doing. But Prince will impress just as many, if not more people.

The difference is that when you see someone like him live, it's too technical and too much guitar. Only fans of extreme guitar will really get into it. You can't just groove to the music like with Prince. Prince mixes it up while keeping a groove going, and he has that technical brilliance as well.

There was a joke on the Vai DVD about who gets the backstage passes at the concert. They said "normally only girls get them, but this is a Steve Vai concert so we don't have to worry about that."

The greatest ever..... bold statement..... most true musicians will not claim a best but rather list influences and their special points.

Lovesexy what is it about Prince's guitar work that makes him better than all others?

Prince rocks and I love his quitar sound and feel, he is one of my favorites but he is no Steve Vai. At the same time Steve doesn't try to play all the instruments and write annie christian.....

It is just such a jeuvenile thought pattern."Prince is the best blah, blah, blah,. This is why this site is so disapointing lately.... People care more about Prince always being right, what he is wearing, his fav food, and forget that you don't have to love everything he does to be a true fan.

Anyway you are entitled do your bold statement. I'll tell you what play a Prince solo, and then try to count what time signature a Vai solo is in, forget about playing it.

What's next..... sorry Vinny Coliauta, sorry Terry Bozzio, sorry Stewart Copeland but since this is prince/.org.... Prince is the best drummer ever.....

By the way Vai was Zappa's stunt guitarist.

Zappa had a great quote which makes a lot sense here.....

"Hydrogen is not the most abundant atom on the planet, stupidity is.....
Music is the best...

they're just music snobs, man...they've convinced themselves that they know "more" about more guitarists than the rest of us do and therefore, it is their rightful duty to "school" us...rolleyes

if they see it, fine. if they don't, it ain't the end of the world.

No feelings hurt here.... Just sometimes people are too much with who's better.

Prince makes great songs and some bad songs and doesn't always have to be the best at everything. Has some bad albums and a ton of bad business decisions.

My whole point was true musicians would never say anyone is the best but rather offer qualities which they like.

For example: Prince: love the tone and live solo's like SHHHH..... also love the funk stuff. Great guitarist. better musician.

Other guitarist's I admire: Rhandy Rhodes, FZ, Zakk Wylde, Nuno.

The answer to the question "Can Prince impress ppl etc" in my eyes is hell yes. Prince blows you mind when you see him live or on the undertaker movie.
He is so well rounded that any musician who sees him immedietly recognizes behind the flashy dress and flavor of the month quest he is and will always be one of the best musicians on the planet.
