New Power Soul

Hey I am just making this post to tell you guys to listen to this album again. I have always loved this album from the very first listening but I know alot of fans put it on once were disapointed and let it collect dust. But this is absoultly a great funk album. My favorite songs are Mad Sex, Untill you're in my arms again, Come on, the one, Push it up, Freeks on this side. I have no idea how this album got such a bad rap. It actually reminds me of Outkast's Atleins which I listen to nonstop in '98 back when New Power Soul came out but Prince all but alienated me by then so I can't belive I didn't pick it up when it first came out. My boyfriend even likes New Power Soul which makes me go omfg because he is soooo picky. I was playing it and he was like, hey I kinda like the songs on this album-is this Prince? Slowly but surely I am converting another Prince fan. Anyway give it another listen I think you will be surprised. biggrin

1. The lyrics are often trite and uninspired.

2. The beats are all cold, plastic, and lifeless.

3. Prince and his band sound bored throughout practically the whole album.

4. It's too full of unnecessary clutter and noise.

5. The songs come off like an old pop star's disingenuous attempts at mainstream hip hop and r&b.

6. The hooks are lazy and uninspired; they sound rushed and half-hearted.

7. The cover art looks about as cheap as anything ever put out by a major artist.

8. I've listened to it many times and it still sucks.

Thank you, good day.

Some of your points might be true, but then again it has songs like The One , Come On and Wasted Kisses on it.
And the rest, except for Push It Up, I like Funky Music and the title track, aren´t bad either.
But those three I mentioned above are not my thing and too corny.
The cover art is as cheap as can get etc. but based on a how-many-good-songs-per-album ratio it is quite OK .

That whole period is just icky to me. The album is watered down and almost a self-parody. Prince had forgotten completely who he was and released a bunch of completely surface level tunes. None of these songs stays in your mind longer than it takes to listen to them. And the whole eerie companion Larry Graham and Chaka Kahn albums...

I'm mentally throwing up as we speak.

All completely true 100%

But I still like the album, and always have - if for nothing else, just it's shear crapness. dancing jig

It's a 'so bad it's good' kinda thing for me.

For so bad it's bad see:
- GCS2000
- Rave Un2
- Kamasutra

On my New Power Soul are 49 Tracks but only 10 are playing and Trach 49 is a song with an emergency sirene and he´s singing about: Why I waist my kisses on you baby !
Is this on every New Power Soul CD?

There's too much damn hip hop on the album. This album sounds like Prince selling out to mainstream and I'm glad it flopped. "When You Love Somebody" is about the only thing I ever listen to on this album.

It is a bit harsh even though some of your points r valid.
wouldn't completely chuck it away though.
Some excellent tunes:
Wasted Kisses
The One
Come One
Mad Sex

The rest is not really inspired but enjoyable.
The same goes for Rave Un2...

It's funny how there's a certain path you have to follow in order to be a 'real' fan; you have to like the right albums and hate the right albums, if you don't you're not considered a true fan.

But I don't care, I like this trashy album 'cause it makes me in a good mood and that's all I care, my favourites are the title track, "When You Love Somebody" and "Waisted Kisses". I'm not usually driven by the lyrics, unless they're really good, I don't care about them as much as the sounds, and I prefer melodies over hooks but each to his/her own.

It's $1.21 for a REASON = it sucks!!! It's the only prince CD that I despise. As I've said many times before, the only reason I don't trash it. sell it or give it away is because of "The One."

I find myself feeling the same way as you do. Like to be a real fan I
have to worship some songs and hate others just like everybody else

I don't have NPS yet but I love The One, and Come On so I
cant wait to get it if for those two alone
If you will, so will I

You are an individual.
We are discussing NPS here and i dont think i have read anyone saying that if you like or hate NPS (or any other album come to think) then you are not a true fan.
Its called a debate.. surely you didnt think everyone had to agree with each other. rolleyes

"Untill you're in my arms again" i feel is poor and very uninspiring, where as "The One" i class at the complete other end to the Prince spectrum. Any compilation i make of prince ballards/lovesongs has got to include this.

Although i agree that the most fullfilling albums do normally require you to put effort in to get full enjoyment out, i do like the non-serious throwaway feel to the album it's one album i like to get ready to go out to.

I have a copy of Come On performed live on The Tonight Show, and if he had put as much effort into the album as he did into this one performance, it would have been a much better album.

The second part was really cool....

To BinaryJustin....

1. Gold Experience doesn't have uninspired lyrics at all whatsoever. Yes, sometimes the lyrics border on being trite sometimes, but nowhere near the half-assed NPS. Also, Prince's vocals alone all over TGE show that he clearly put his heart & soul into all of the songs. The same can't be said for practically all of NPS.

2. 1999 is supposed to sound cold; its whole theme is apocalyptic, futuristic, and cold. It fits the album perfectly. NPS, on the other hand, is merely cheaply made and full of the absolute worst drum programming courtesy of Kirky J.

3. Prince and his band do indeed sound bored on NPS. Very tired sounding performances all over that album.

4. NPS is WAY worse with the unnecessary clutter and noise than prince. It's full of annoying crowd chant choruses.

5. While D&P and prince annoyingly had Tony M. and the like, NPS as a whole is full of half-assed hip hop imitation songs and generic r&b.

6. Can't totally disagree about D&P, but then again, I don't like that album much either. At least it had some well-crafted vintage Prince songs like Insatiable and Cream on it though. Still, you're just comparing NPS to another pretty bad Prince album. Not a very good argument to defend NPS with.

7. Just cause you searched around and found even worse cover art doesn't make NPS's suddenly suck any less.

8. Thank you, I'll need those ear plugs the next time someone puts NPS on.

biggrin

TGE has ONE song with those kind of lyrics. NPS is littered with them (in fact, it has one song with even halfway decent lyrics: "Wasted Kisses")

PurpleKnight said:

2. The beats are all cold, plastic, and lifeless.

And that's a bad thing?

Yes. The beats on 1999 were innovative. NPS they were a re-tread, at best (and there isn't ANYTHING on NPS that is half as interesting as 1999)

PurpleKnight said:

Manic? With the tepid playing on crap like "When U Love Somebody"? Incredibly boring.

prince is, indeed, cluttered. The songs are interesting, so I forgive it. NPS isn't interesting.

PurpleKnight said:

Doug E. Fresh or Tony M?

I'll give you that one. I'd rather hear Doug E any day (and, at least he limited the rap on NPS). I've often lamented that D&P could have been a fantastic album if Tony M hadn't been present.

PurpleKnight said:

6. The hooks are lazy and uninspired; they sound rushed and half-hearted.

Again, I agree. D&P is pretty lame too, but not AS lame as NPS (with the exception of "Jughead". There is nothing on NPS nearly as revolting as that one.

PurpleKnight said:

7. The cover art looks about as cheap as anything ever put out by a major artist.

Agreed. I don't think the cover really has any bearing. D&P has a great cover, but that doesn't save it.

No hearing aide required. the crap is quite audible. You just have to accept that you and maybe two other people like this album. That's okay. Everyone has guilty pleasures.

Couldn't agree more. When I saw him play "eye Like Funky Music" on the tour before the album came out, I was quite excited. I was extremely dissapointed when I heard the studio version (and I still wanna hear someone remix that track with some kickin' drum sounds. If Blackwell had played on that one, it would have been a kick ass tune).

The horns are pathetic. They are arranged sooooo poorly. Plus, the songs they are featured on are shitty, so it doesn't matter if they had been decent.
