Joy in Repetition -- different on tape? I used to have this on cassette. I'm nearly sure there is an extra second or two at the end on the tape as compared with the CD version. After the final scream..."in repetition," there is half a second of that kinda organ sound, not even. On the tape which was at the end of side one, I'm nearly sure this sound continues and changes note...I know this is extreme anorack trivia, but I'm just wondering if I "made the notes up in my head." Also, even a precious second is important on this song (the tape version is better!!!!!)

Goddamn...i knew it! Now I'll have to get a transfer or somethin'. What came after joy on crystal ball sequencing? Methinks the CD is an irreverent cut! probably the record compnay...despite prince having complete creative control, they can probably do that kinda thing...

of course it may be a new type of seque...with the different formats and all, but still..who cares about Love Machine?!!

are you sure it's not just a product of how the tracks are divided on CD as opposed to on tape? i mean, the little extra bit of sound might be there, but if you listen to either song on its own, that blip might get swallowed up?
just a weird thought - i've never noticed this difference.

no, as the first person who answered said, it is there...I'm pretty sure I remember it. Mind you, it is only an extra second or two, but definitely longer. Basically, because side one ends there, it may have been added for the sake of continuity. It may have been omitted on CD to make the track segue...I'm not sure who did this though...Prince or the record company...the difference is only minute, but still, I'd rather do without half of Graffiti Bridge...you can't deduct a second or two from "Joy." That is criminal!!
And I really like the extra second...I know it sounds dumb...but i remember being excited with this extra ending (I originally had the CD). It finishes the song on a better note, or something!

oh and you mean, does the sound get added to the next track...I don't think so...will double check now, but no, it isn't there on CD as far as I know...
I know I'm not the only nerd here...I bet some of you are dying to hear the extra second now!

Anyone: is the extra second or so on vinyl as well?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
my guess is that it would be...but was it a double album?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It was a double album, but I wasn't sure if Joy ended a side of the vinyl. . .if it didn't it might just segue into Love Machine. . .

The big difference was the intro, not the end. .

What about "When Doves Cry" 12" single (vinyl) -- it says "album version" but I swear there's an extra beat thrown in there somewhere. I noticed it the first couple times I played it because I was so used to listening to the album version but the 12" a one second or so where it was different. Even the length of the song is listed different, right? Something like 5:55 on the 12" and 5:53 on the album? Or, who knows... I could be wrong and just dreamt the whole extra beat into existence?? Just wondering if anyone else noticed.

Of the original yes, but on released cassette of "Graffiti Bridge" "Joy In Repetition" ends one side with a longer ending that isn't on the vinyl and CD release... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

Your probably thinking of the sequencing from the boot HOT CHOCOLATE..... "

Alright!!! Now we have a good old fashioned boot discussion! I understand the different beginning SquirrelMeat is talking about. I like that opening too...instead of the party noises, it starts with echoed beats and builds up from there...in fact, that must be the way the song was originally recorded, and only later made to seque, though I have just listened to that version and it omits the extra sound at the end (it ends nearly identically to the official CD version!). So perhaps the noise was created specifically for the tape (so that people wouldn't be surprised by the abrupt ending), since we've already established that the vinyl was probably different. (Man this is way up there on the nerdometer!) The "echoed" bootleg beginning doesn't sound like he put much thought into it either, so he probably always intended this song to segue. Now it is 5:30am here, and no one answered my question, I could go off and find out, but I'm sure someone knows off the top of their head...what came after Joy on the original Crystal Ball? Was it to segue into another piece? We all know that "Tha Ball," which later became "Eye Know," originally lead into Joy. It would be funny to hear "Eye Know" segued into Joy! I'm sure some boffins out there could do it...I downloaded a cleaned up version The Ball running into (if I say segued one more time I'll have gone over my daily limit) Joy. Sounds like someone took the best source they could for "the Ball" and spliced it with the released version, but it is very well done...I also remember having a version of We Can Funk where the line "you like to frequent" was mixed in a few times with the final noises of We Can Funk to a fade out...

Wow that is weird, I am listening to this song now as I read this. This is my song of the moment...so sexy and spiritual! “The only love there is is the love we make.” 💜

Side Four of The Crystal Ball:
The Ball Joy In Repetition Strange Relationship I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man The version of "Joy.." you hear on the Grafitti Bridge cassette is from the same recording that circulated on the 'Chocolate Box' vinyl. All edits of the track are from the same master. The longer outro can be heard on the 'Chocolate Box' as part of the recording that also features the longer intro. The cassette has the edit which was segued from We Can Funk with the longer outro intact and the CD was given the version which segues from We Can Funk and edits the last few seconds of the outro. This was done because in those days CD's were unable to hold as much information as they can now and time constraints warranted an edit somewhere.

Aahhh! and the version of Strange Relationship is the Sign version, not Dream Factory one? I can easily imagine "there's joooooyyyy in repetition," leading into the start of Sign O' Times "Strange Relationship."
But to calrify, the CD was edited out of necessity...some puzzles being answered!! I thought the tape had just gained the second, but in fact it is the CD that is edited...should have just left off Melody Cool in favor of the extra second!
