What a fantastic day I got Vanity 6... Some sucker came into my work (Amoeba SF) and sold a pristine copy of Vanity 6 on CD. i couldn't believe it when I saw it...still can't.

Loads of these going on eBay recently - there's about 6 listed right now, at least one sealed. For a supposedly rare OOP cd it seems to be remarkably easy to get hold of all of a sudden. Too bad it's not that great of an album. The fascination is purely in it rareness. I had one of these, too. Got it from Tower Records in '92 for $14.99. Sold it on eBay in 2000 for $200.
Do I miss it? Sure I do, but not all that much. There's really only two good songs on it, and one of them is on CD on Girl 6.

I disagree, I've always like this album...I think the production so ahead of its time. All that electro clash stuff sounds like this. Don't get me wrong I had the record since it came out (my mom bought it) But I've never had it on CD, after a comparison; sounds like my vinyl transfer with some Pro-Tools compression and boosting sounds better. I wonder why they're floating around? Nero

I wonder why they're floating around? Nero I really like this album also. I've come to appreciate the new wave sound of the album more recently as opposed to when I first bought it back in 1984. I think it was when I heard the sample of "Bite The Beat" in Felix da Housecat's "What It Feels Like" a few years ago that the album began to get played a lot again.

Well, all these early cds could definitely do with re-mastering, none of them sound particularly great. As to why there's so many floating around, my guess would be that it was pirated - I'm sure some (maybe even all) of them are legit, but for a cd that was rare enough to sell for $200 in 2000 to suddenly be selling for around $30 seems a tad unusual. I will always love this album.Got the CD version years ago on E-bay & have no regrets payin the amount I paid. I highly doubt at this point if it will ever be reissued .

I've had this album on vinyl since it came out, and I've always thought it was fantastic! Definately one of the more underrated 80s releases. If nothing else, "If a Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)" has to warm the cockles of any Prince fan's heart.
oh, I see, did he just take out the trash? no, that's something he used to do, now he's taking out me." And, imho, Nasty Girl, is one of the all time great Prince party trax. at12tone

[Edited 3/3/05 2:26am] The problem is that it's not always cheap on eBay. It usually goes for about $30 minimum. This is an album I mean to get my hands on eventually, but I'm not willing to pay through the nose for it. I've got my 12" single of Drive Me Wild, and that's good enough for now.

I agree with neronava and sextonseven - You'd be surprised how many non-Prince fans love the Vanity 6 album, and see as some cheesy, yet pioneering electro-girl group. Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......

Well I don't think $30 is much at all for an oop cd (especially given today's exchange rates ) I doubt you'll find it for much less than that, even with all the copies now being listed. [Edited 3/3/05 12:46pm] Perhaps you're right. Maybe I mean it's not so cheap for an album that contains only a few songs I like. I have the vinyl and just wanna upgrade.

Is this CD really that hard to find? I bought the CD in the early 90s,it was very easy to find back then.

I love the Vanity 6 album. It's a fun, sleazy little album with alot of attitude. There's intoxicating funk ("Nasty Girl"),some slick New Wave tracks ("Bite The Beat","Drive Me Wild"),even a hilarious rap-type jam ("If A Girl Answers Don't Hang Up").In many ways, these songs were ahead of their time.Musically, this is one of Prince's most experimental projects.

The Vanity 6 lp is pretty darn good. I didn't always think so, however. True, the best song is "Nasty Girl", but "He's So Dull" grew on me as well as "Bite The Beat". The last cut is probobly the weakest, but all the others hold their own even today. The cover is hot, too. I was fortunate to see "6" in concert years ago, and it is still one of my favorite memories... tell me how you wanna be done...
