Letitgo Appreciation Thread

I never hear this song mentioned when people talk about Prince classics and I am not sure if I feel it belongs there either. But I do love the vibe of this song. The song just slinks out of the speakers with this G funk flow that doesn't sound derivative, like so many other attempts Prince has made at the genre. I love the biographical lyrics, a real glimpse into the man's head during the more insular periods in his life. It's one of those "I know I have been an a-hole but I'm going to try a lot harder to chill" songs, in the same genre with "In This Bed Eye Scream" which I also love. The 3 million strong line always strikes me as funny because I don't think "the army" has been that strong since the mid-80's but I like the assertion that, even though he may be dismissed now by some, his music will remain viable and important for years to come. Such a depressing period for the man, with the name change/Warners crap in full swing, but I appreciate this enlightening gem that the era produced.

Your thoughts?

EvilWhiteMale is my best friend. I made him a peppermint necklace. Together we will take down Larry Grahm and free Prince and his music. Prince will thank us and perform sexual favors for us. Then EvilWhiteMale and I will get married. We will make love and have EvilWhiteBlackMaleFemale children

Letitgo is a good song cause it promotes female orgasm.
If you listen closely it also promotes the passing of gas.
I believe some of the instuments on the song are really
Prince and his band members passing gas and recording it.

underrated classic. One of those that I didn't really dig at first, then one day it was like "damn, this is a pretty good song..."

The whole come album is pretty cool. Makes ppl horny.
Prince will never sound that good agian.
I'm not interested in rainbow childern or daisy chains and golden parachutes and crazy sounding shit like that. I feel like Prince's music has died.

Could have been a hit. Should have been a hit!

And I like the way it shows off Prince's vocal range right at the very beginning, down to the low E...

Yes it SHOULD have been a hit. It hit like Number 38 but if Prince and Warners weren't involved in WW III at the time it had Top 10 potential. Unlike so many other albums, Prince actually released the appropriate first single. It just didn't go anywhere because there was no video and no promotion.

Afraid to get involved in what kind of butt the Come album most reminds people of...perhaps we could start a whole new thread of what kinds of butts various Prince albums bring to mind. lol

Or maybe not.

I don't know why but when I heard the song the very first time
it sounded very farmiliar. As if I'd known it for years. Once,
I thought it sounded distantly like Gett Off.

I just can't put my finger on it with this song. The remixes on
the single are all pretty tight. The Sherm Stick remix that has
the Dorothy Parker sound is pretty slick.

As a song, it stands out, yet I'm never sure if I like it more
than the others or less.

It confuses me and I don't like that. I want control to either
rip it to shreds or to adore it. I don't want to be undecided

mad

Anywho. Prince himself said at one point that "letitgo" was the
coolest song he'd written in years.

And that was not his usual "pre-release" nonsensical hyping, no
it was well after the song and album had been released. In fact
I think it was an Emancipation era intervieuw where he hailed it
as one of the best things he'd done in the 1990's

letitgo just doesn't cut it for me. it'd be one of the first to go in an prince song survivor. the song isn't bad, but it is so...bland, i guess...lifeless and lethargic, UNlike so much of prince's music of the same era: days of wild, come, endorphinmachine, dolphin, loose! all come to mind.
the only + thing i'l say is, like a previous post pointed out, it sounds like an emancipation-era track, and it's cool that it sort of pre-dates "jam of the year" and that whole chill, funk vibe. but in the context of come, it tends to bring me down.

It's hard to know what to make of this song. It's so laid back it's hard to say it's great. But then it's so cool & perfect how could it not be great? The melody is perfect, and the lyrics flow really well. It has a hook that's not cheesy. It's not embarrassing or too long.

It says a lot about his mindset at the time. Like a cooler Dolphin.

Sorry.
I've said that I think Dolphin might be the greatest prince song, but I don't think it's that cool on a superficial level.

Letitgo comes from probably one off his best albums to date (COME), vastly underrated and totally underappreciated. Little exposure or promotion at the time kept this gem of an album out of the commercial limelight!

Prince does seem at times to miss those big commercially viable single opportunities and in letitgo he could have had a hit! But hey maybe that was the point.
