First off, what albums don't you own? It's important that you hear them in a particular order. We should be able to help you with that... [Edited 2/26/05 16:30pm]

why would anyone want to rent music instead of own it?
I've been buying music for about 30 years now and have an extensive music collection of artists I enjoy listening to. The music is mine and I can play it as often as I want for as many years as I want. Had I rented instead of bought the music - at $15/month, I would ahve spent $5400 and wouldn't own anything. Stop renting and I would have no music. If the rental company goes out of business, I would have no music. My whole collection of everything Prince ever released would go "poof". Renting makes sense for watching movies, but makes no sense for music.

Hey alandail!!!
I've been thinking about you, because I just got my new computer all set up and I'm LOVING the i-tunes site (don't have an i-pod yet, but it's on my list!) - but I don't really NEED an i-pod, because for $.99 I can buy a track off i-tunes, or buy a whole album for a reasonable price (not to mention all the exclusive singles and remixes)...and in minutes I'm bumping along to hot new music in my ride. Don't get me wrong, I still use Limewire when I want something free - for example, like I wanted to theme song to the movie "True Romance," so I grabbed it off Limewire. When it's an artist I really support and respect, I have no problem paying for it - in fact I strangely enjoy it. I loved paying for Beck's new (ULTRA-HOTTT!!!!) i-tunes exclusive EP, and Macy Gray's new exclusive tracks, and Bjork exclusive tracks, and the list goes on and on (in fact, I think I might go buy some more right now!) And the BEST part, is that 1 out of every 3 20-oz. Mountain Dews has a free i-tunes song under the cap - you KNOW I'm buying those bitches in bulk!!!! No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

There's some thing going on at Napster where you can get unlimited mp3 download for 15$ a month.

This is the only way I get my music. I just don't have the patience for downloading. This is also the reason that from 1999 to now, the only Prince albums I have are Rave, TRC, ONA Live, NEWS and Musicology. The other stuff he's put out through the web I've just had to do without. I think it would be easier just to hunt down all of Prince's released albums at record shops. They're not very expensive nowadays and it's just better to get them this way; you know, liner notes and photos and stuff.

It was a real shame that the Chocolate Invasion CD set never happened, because it looks like it may have only been our only chance to own the NPGMC stuff on CD.
mp3 and wma is fair enough to listen to on my PC, but if I'm PAYING for it, I want it in the best quality available. I thought , in theory, the NPGMC could've been something really great, but it never turned out that way - Why am I not surprised? Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......

U should buy the classics like Purple Rain, SOTT, 1999, Dirty Mind and more.....I would use filesharing applications more for rare stuff. It's goin' down y'all.

Well, I should have qualified my statement to say that i-tunes is great for non-Prince songs. There are only a handful of Prince songs on there at all b/c...well, I forget why, the NPGMC doesn't like their digital rights management or something.
Usually I like to have the physical product, in my hand....but when it comes to a song from a compilation or a couple of cuts from a band, when I really don't need the whole album? I'm all about the mp3, I love it. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Prince should put his whole catalog in iTunes. Pearl Jam is the BEST example of this. They have 87 albums available on iTunes.
iTunes is encoded in 128kb AAC which is CD quality and a third the size of MP3 or WMA file. Napster uses low quality WMA, which is also a large file compared to AAC iTunes = CD quality and I own it Napster = low quality encoding and I rent it. Fraunhofer Institute which created the MP3 and AAC has stated that AAC is MUCH better than MP3. "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.
RIAA 'nuff said. | |
