Graffiti Bridge: A Second Look

I just popped this in my machine after years of NOT watching it. I looked at it all the way through without interruptions and i came to one conclusion:

*****WHY DID I EVER HATE THIS MOVIE. IT IS ONE OF THE BEST OF ALL TIME***

I LOVE this movie. It has a very deep story that you might not get at first(like me) and the music is awesome. I guess it is true that some things are only appreciated years after they are released. I have now added this to my list of all time favorite movies. I had a joke thread of this a few months ago so i know many will not believe me, but this time i am serious. No, i am not putting it in the same category as The Godfather or Gone with the Wind, but it is in a category of its own. Does ANY one agree with me?

I watched it yesterday, and even though its execution is pretty flawed, I really like the messages in it. I don't think it's really that bad at all.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Not much of a storyline (plot & character development, etc) is what I'm sayin'. Tho the music bits are rather excellent. And the spiritual message is kinda cool. But the movie as a whole falls apart in so many ways. I can't really recommend it to anyone.

It's not a good movie per say by "industry standards" but if you are a Prince fan it's not all bad...I will watch it again

I actually liked the sets in it. I thought they added a fantastical, imaginative mood to the movie that fit the spiritual elements of its message.

GB is a little incoherent at times, but I think it has some redeeming elements. Like I said, it's marred by really flawed execution.

The music is pretty great.

Ummmmm, no. This movie is massive ego run amuck. This movie made me appreciate Under The Cherry Moon because, as big as a vanity project as that was, at least it looked professionally made. Grafitti Bridge looked like a high school film project with extremely fake scenery, epiletic editing, and a completely jackass script. Didn't both Madonna and Kim Basinger turn down GB? That has GOT to tell you something.

Love the man but who besides hardcore Prince fans could enjoy, or even follow, what was going on. Has any sequel in history been less connected with it's predecessor? How did The Kid go from the awesome perfomer who kicked ass in his concluding battle to a guy still living in Minneapolis owning a nightclub that noone goes to? Did The Kid make it big? Was he just too screwed up to suceed? What happened to Apollonia? How did Billy die? Where the hell was Wendy and Lisa and the Doctor and Brownmark? Okay, we know what happened in real life but within the constraints of fiction isn't some sort of explanation neccessary? Is this the Kid or is this Prince we're dealing with? And what about the tone...Purple Rain was gritty and real while GB is fluffy and supernatural. And just plain silly.

GB would have made for an interesteing concept album (no worse than Love Symbol) but the visuals attached are just plain silly. For a movie to work, you either have to have a strong script and strong execution, an average script and superior execution, or a strong script and semi-professional execution. Grafitti Bridge the movie has none of these things and quite frankly should just be executed.
All good things they say never last...

I love prince too much to care whether or not his movies are good. He's a musician and not so much an actor.

Well i disagree. We did not need to know what happened to the other characters from PR. The script was original and the acting was superb. I admit i did not notice this back in 1990 but after a SECOND WATCH, i realize i overlooked a diamond in the rough.

I love these threads seriosuly. Every month it seems someone just discovers how crap it is or how good it is.

I've always loved it. If its the music then i understand but some people take movies so seriously.....

It is a complex movie that you have to watch more than once to get a full understanding. To me that makes for a great movie because it makes you watch it over and over. My favorite line in the movie is when The Kid says to Aura:
"It's hard to see green, when there is so much blue". You can't get better dialogue than than.

Its great if you only watch the musical portions (then its like a video collection). Its the parts in-between that are truly painful to watch.

Somebody needs to dig up that thread about all the horrible moments in the film. It was truly hysterical, and said all the things I would about it in a much better way

Plenty of people here are mature and open-minded. Just because they don't agree with your assessment of this film doesn't mean that their minds are closed.

Personally, I think P had some great ideas in this film, and a wonderful message. Unfortunately, he just can't direct. He should have worked with an outside director to craft the film into a more intelligible narrative.

I've seen acting in porno's better executed.

Come to think of it, I've heard dialogue more well thought out in pornos too.

You know--I've even seen pornos who's story line was more engaging even on a nonsexual level.

Jesus--GB really sucks!
