Which album produced the best choice of singles?

I say Purple Rain.I would have said SOTT if only Prince had made Housequake and Adore singles.

I would say the best single choices were from:

1999
Purple Rain
Diamonds & Pearls (the buzz created by Gett Off, which wasn't suitable for radio but was all over clubs and MTV, was genius...success that was attempted to be copied for 0(+> with "Sexy MF"

Purple Rain, though he still fucked up by not releasing The Beautiful Ones as a single instead of Take Me With U.

Hmmm..toss up between 1999 and Purple Rain. Both produced perfect radio friendly songs.

Have to agree with consensus so far:

1. Purple Rain (Perfect choice of singles even though as PurpleKnight pointed out, The Beautiful Ones would have been better than Take Me With U)

2. 1999 (Great selection, the three radio friendly songs that should have been released were...nothing else would have fit radio formats)

3. Diamonds and Pearls (How a decent album can become a pretty good one...release the right singles. Best marketing of Prince's career. Club song (Gett Off) to get the buzz. Great pop songs, Cream and Diamonds and Pearls, that dominated the radio for most of 1991. Money Didn't Matter 2Night wouldn't have been m choice for fourth single...Willing and Able would have done better)

4. Around the World in a Day (The two songs that had the best chart potential were released. Raspberry Beret was a great choice for first single. Pop Life charted number 8 but that was without a video. America did decently but didn't reach Top 40).

5. Sign O The Times (3 of the 5 single were inspired choices for promotion, title track, U Got the Look, and ICNTPOYM. Album almost destroyed by Girlfriend as I expound on in another thread do I penalize single selection for that.)

Every other Prince album was afflicted with bad single choices. Bad single choices killed or stalled momentum for Gold Experience, Symbol Album, Batman, Graffiti Bridge, Emancipation, Musicology, and many more.
All good things they say never last...

"DMSR", "Lady Cab Driver", "Automatic", "International Lover", and "Free" received massive R&B airplay and fit in very well, much moreso than "Little Red Corvette" and "Delirious".

Snap

Purple Rain

...but still, it should've been like this:

1. When Doves Cry w/ 17 Days
2. Let's Go Crazy w/ Erotic City
3. Purple Rain w/ God
4. Computer Blue w/ Computer Blue Part 2
5. The Beautiful Ones w/ Electric Intercourse

Purple Rain, definitely.
but then it was such a strong commercial album that any song off it could have
been a hit single. I also think they could've released a 6th single from the
album - The Beautiful Ones / Computer Blue. Then we would've had the extended
version of Computer Blue officially released on the b-side to the 12".
(Well, I can dream).

One of the first major career mistakes Prince made was NOT letting Purple Rain ride for another 6 months to a year. He could have released a few more singles from that album. Instead he released ATWIAD less than 1 year after Purple Rain. What the F*?K ! I don't mean that he should have let Purple Rain drag on for years the way Michael Jackson did with Thriller but, he could have held back on releasing a new record for a little while longer.
