Am I the only one who thinks the worst song on Musicology is actually....

...Musicology itself?

Seriously, this is barely even a song. At least songs like LOTP or Cinnamon Girl actually had some type of chorus or hook (though not good ones, I'll admit).

Musicology is just one really boring beat throughout that never kicks into second gear. Plus, Prince of all ppl name dropping past artists in a song? Ugh.

Besides, the synth at the end is directly lifted from My Computer.

Overall, it sounds like an unfinished demo of parts of a whole song.

You're not alone smile I find this to be a very weak track, and even though it is the title track, I think Prince would have found more success in releasing Reflection,Dear Mr.Man,or even The Marrying Kind as a single opposed to Musicology.

Musicology I can live with...although I hated it at first, it kind of grew on me. The one song on this album that I really don't like is Reflections. I mean the lyrics make absolutely no sense...just ramblings confuse

Although I have to say, I listen faithfully to each and every song on the album and sing along whether I like the song or not...because I have to! rolleyes

I liked the bassline too at first, til I heard the whole song and realized that was the song.

Like I said, it's barely even a song. Just one bassline throughout, with absolutely nothing interesting happening. It's like a demo of what was to be a real song.

Yes, like he's playing guitar, reflecting about life, singing some of his thoughts. Then you pick them up, think about them and get a nice little insight on the mood he was in. Great, if you ask me.

BTW, what do you think of Bowie's The Bewlay Bros (if you know it)?

Bass line is ok, but if there's one thing in that song that's really funky it's the guitar! Listen to it - that's some bad-ass funk right there.

The second worst song off Musicology to me is just that, What Do U Want Me 2 Do? nod

It's boring like Musicology, and if there's one thing I didn't think Prince could be, it's boring.

Nope. The song is really funky. How can you not love about 3/4 thru the song when that old school MPLS sound synths kick in?

Musicology is incredibly funky and although the first couple of times I heard it, I wasn't sure - I believe it shows what a genius he is. The bassline, the guitar, the drum lines. Such simplicity. Although there is more urgency in the song when he does it live, with the new horn line.

All of my musician friends who were so-so about post-1990 Prince are still raving about this song 10 months after they first heard it (and know how to play parts of it).

eek What Do U Want Me 2 Do is my favorite song on Musicology. I can't stand those overblown Broadway-esque songs in the middle (The Marrying Kind/If I Was the Man...) or the overtly cheesy songs (Life 'o' the Party/Cinnamon Girl), but the rest of the album is thumbs up!.

I have trouble naming a "least favorite" off this album. Altho, that said, there's nothing on it that blows my mind either. But if I had to pick something it would be "Cinnammon Toast"

Musicology grew on me. It was the concert that did it for me. It just sounded so good as it fed off of the electric energy of the moment.

Now my absolute favorite song on the Musicology album is Marrying Kind. That is just a damn jam - the music, Prince's voice...what it's all about.

I like What Do U Want Me 2 Do, the mood reminds me of Dorothy Parker a bit - especially with the heavy bass line.

My least favorite songs (the ones I always skip) are Life Of The Party, Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance and Cinnamon Girl...sorry I just couldn't get into those three.

Musicology is not a bad song. First time I heard it, I loved it, and most people I know who are not 'big' Prince fans seem to like it on first listen too, from what I came to see.

Cinnamon and Illusion.. are horrible.

Musicology is one of those songs where I think Prince was going for a simple song with basic elements, a la "Sign O The Times." It's a mid-tempo party song that doesn't rub the wrong way at all -- it's catchy and it's the first non-ballad single from a Prince album in what seems like eons. For that, I dig it. wink
