For musical influences, 4 of the 24 finalists for American Idol listed Prince, which was more than I saw for any other artist. One finalist, Nikko Smith, said "Prince is like the real American Idol". Pretty cool but noone has chosen to sing a Prince song yet. 87 damn Stevie Wonder songs but nothing by P.

I'm rooting for the Prince fans...and hoping those that cited Usher as a musical influence get the wrath of Simon!

I can't believe I actually voted last night. I have never watched AI, because it's on the same time as Gilmore Girls, but when I heard Mario Vasquez a few weeks ago, I knew he'd win. He is just sooo adorable. And on his audition song, he sounded like maxwell. :swoon:

Anyways, some of them are pretty good! What was up with all the ballads though? boooring.

I hate to admit that I watch, but I do.

All the show has proven to me is how great Stevie Wonder is.

Not only does set the standard for singing, but he wrote the songs as well. And the one fun song last night was Do I Do. It's a singers song, but it was fast & fun. I'm so sick of ballads on that show.

I'd like to see someone sing Tamborine or Tick Tick Bang. At least it'd be different.

I was just looking at all the finalists and I could only find 2 girls into Prince...not 4. I'll have to re-check.

i've never heard any American Idol do a Prince song and I may be wrong but i suspect its because they can't get clearance, does anyone else know about this?

I think the reason why nobody has ever performed a Prince song on american idol is because they can't get permission to use his songs, they probably try to get clearance first but get denied, u know Prince is very protective of how his music is used, and in this case I'm very glad, he doesnt even want established artists to cover his songs let alone people on american idol, although tick tick bang would be funny, especially if they wrote beat me on their chest, that would be a great finale.
