Actually I've always likened Purple Rain to A Hard Days Night. Both are associated with their first films, and both represent the artists at the peaks of their respective manias. Also they capture what may be the most enduring visual style and personalities of each.

But 1999 as Rubber Soul? Maybe. Albums packed with great songs. Individual styles well established. Well on the way to creative genius, but maybe not quite yet there. Easy to listen to, yet not pandering to pop conventions.

GREAT observations! Totally agree!

Wait, is Graffiti Bridge his Help! then?

Sorry to leave you hanging, I had to go skiing.

Help is a pretty silly movie, too. Of course it's no Graffiti Bridge!

Actually, the albums have some similarities. They both have some great songs, but Purple Rain and Hard Days Night are much stronger albums in my opinion. I think Help & GB are two of each artist's worst albums (though neither really has any awful ones).

Beatles for Sale and Controversy?
