A lot of people as you can see above don't like 'Possessed' (by Alex Hahn) as it dares to highlight some of the more unsavoury facets of Prince's character - It is the most up to date book though and I quite enjoyed it. '

DMSR - Prince, the First Decade'(by Per Nilsen) is a very good book that focuses more on the music than the gossip side of things, covering his career up to 1988.

The one before Possessed was 'Slave to the Rhythm', the only bio written by a woman so far, which I also enjoyed - It was written around the period when his baby died and the name change etc. - can't remember who wrote it though.

'Prince, a Pop Life' - (by Dave Hill) was also good I think but it has been years since I read it and I've lost my copy.

Hope that helps.

unsavory facets or no (and for fuck's sake, like we don't know/wish to know that prince is a fuckin dick and a half already), the book was written and edited poorly. piss-poorly, in fact.

liz jones was the author of that one...almost forgot to mention that slave to... was the name of the book on its first pressing. it's also known as purple reign, as stated above. same book, diff titles. thumbs up!

The 'people' I was referring to don't object to the book on those grounds. Anybody with something approaching a balanced view knows that there are many people on here who foam at the mouth whenever the great man is criticised.

As to the title change for the other book, thanks for the info.

I had "Slave 2 the rythmn" but wasn't too crazy about it...

The Vault looks more "just the facts ma'am."

I think you are just saying that because it shows Prince's unflattering side. But who's not to say alot of it isn't true?

No, what it showed was the author rolleyes had an ax to grind and no clue!! 2004 proved without a doubt Prince hasn't fallen anywhere!!

I'm not answering for Handclaps... but,

Because a lot of the prominent people mentioned in the book weren't even interviewed if I remember the uproar about the book correctly. Most notetably Wendy, Lisa, Mayte, and a bunch of other folks who either declined to comment or flat out said they had signed agreements not to discuss Mr. Nelson. That means there's a lot of he said/she said second hand info stated as fact. Besides the fact that the guy who wrote it had an ax to grind. Add that to the fact that a lot of the book was rehash of that awful Purple Reign/Slave 2 the Rhythm book written by that Liz whatshername.

If any of the Uptown folks still read this site is there any possibility that The Vault will be re-issued and divided into two parts, having the second part pick up where D.M.S.R. left off in 1988. I have D.M.S.R. already so I don't want to re-purchase that portion of the book. Besides 2004 gave you a whole new chapter to add. R&R Hall of Fame Induction, new tour, 2 Grammys. smile
