What songs did Prince buy (first step to acceptance) I noticed something unusual on "Musicology"
Prince put Stokley Williams on "Call My name" singing background vocals. As you progress in the album you hear a song titled "If I was the man in ur life" if you listen to it you can hear the Mint condition influence everything from the drum hits to the band accents in the intro/to the lead vocals No doubt about it thats Mint Condition influence Prince was into Mint in the nineties when they came on the scene. He probably has all their albums. Stokley Williams has been MIA for a while. With his solo and group. Since I believe 1998. > Could he be ghosting songs to Prince such as this? Cuz that singing backin vox (not even noticeable) on Call my name doesnt add up. Let's be real. This is part of the industry. Stokley will never tell if he is paid. But this to me is a signal that just is obvious to me when I see writers in odd areas of the album. So this thread is all about songs Prince bought. Let the controversy and speculation of whats not a Prince song but a bought and paid for track. I think Soul Sanctuary is a good example of Prince not giving any money to Sandra Victor and putting all her lyrics on Emancipation and sending her a thank u card. Mint Condition performed at Paisley Park during the first Celebration in 2000. Of course it adds up. Prince wanted Stokley's vocals on the album, so he arranged for him to come along and sing backing on a track. Let's be real. This is part of the industry. Stokley will never tell if he is paid. 'Call My Name' in style, arrangement, lyrical content and performance is most typically a Prince ballad. So this thread is all about songs Prince bought.

Rings Gong::: Let us Begin Sandra St Victor did get money for her contribution to 'Soul Sanctuary'. Clearly this was a misunderstanding between herself and Prince when she shared tapes of her sole and joint work when he proposed some form of collaboration. Subsequently, following telephone discussions, she is reported to have received a check as well as a card from Prince, and she is also currently registered to receive publishing monies for her contribution to the song at ASCAP along with others who originally worked on the song, as well as Prince. . . Lange, these are your opinions but basically what I mean it doesnt add up is why Stokley Williams on background vocals. A common practice in the industry is to put someone on the album in a barely noticeable role but in the
I know about the celebration,Lange. You can talk til your Blue in the face about Sandra Victor and Prince, But no one knows what the story behind that is. I do tend to take Sandras version. You can read Uptown til you are blue in the face but in the end its just a opinion. You do not know about Sandra's story as much as I do. Because we weren't there. Being around producers in my business, I can tell you I see traces of Ghostwriting on Musicology. Think what you want. But at the end of the day your opinion and mine are just that opinions. But its common and I wouldnt doubt if Prince did it if he loved the song that much. What im telling you is, I wouldnt be surprised if Stokley wrote If eye was the man in ur life for the album. And how do you know Sandra got paid? this is clearly just conjrecture on your part | |

I see what your saying, but "If I was..." sounds like a basic funk track, that Prince kills on. As far as drum hits, & vamps being evidence of ghost writing, or even influence is a little of a stretch, The arrangement of that song is pretty basic. Great groove, and vocal though....Thats what P does.

How do I know? Well, firstly, as I stated before, following Sandra St Victor investigating the lack of monies being received, her publishing company was registered at ASCAP, so she (and all the other co-writers of the song who are registered) should now receive publishing monies due to them. How do I know that Sandra St Victor received a payment direct from Prince? Well, without reading opinion, or Uptown until I'm blue in the face, I read the three most direct accounts about the incident that I know about. Sandra St.Victor has now made reference to the matter on a BBC programme, on her website, and in two exchanges with Aaron from www.housequake.com To quote her words: "When 'Emancipation' came out, WITH 'Soul Sanctuary' on it, it was a surprise to me! I went about finding out what I could via my publishing company, and swifty received a check from his majesty in the mail." Now, I am quite prepared to admit that I don't have access to Sandra St.Victor's bank account to establish whether the check she claims to have received was in fact, received from Prince, presented to her bank, and honoured in the payment. So, in that respect, I quite agree that it was all conjecture on my part. Other than that, why is it conjecture on my part to state that Sandra St Victor has received payment for the song when: a. she admits she has received a payment from Prince relating to the song b. it's a matter of public record that her publishing company is now legally registered to receive monies for the song? .
