Because he's not wrong. After Dirty Mind, Controversy was looked at as half-assed.

You mean as opposed to Dirty Mind being looked at as "full-assed"?

I used to get mad ad Prince when He released yet another
single which I knew wouldn't do great at all!!
If I was your girlfriend has been mentioned a couple off times in other threads,
He should have put out Strange Relationship or U got the look as 2nd single.
Would have done great in Europe.
Lovesexy was a difficult album to sell with the cover art work and one track
rubbish but...the tour was great, still one off my fav.
Maybe the album didn't sell in teh US but in Europe He sold
1.5 million copies!!!Not so bad huh?

Hmmmmm,

Lovesexy wasn't really a momentum killer in the UK, I have a feeling it sold more than SOTT when it FIRST came out (not now obviously). Gold is without doubt a superb fonky slab of intense stuff. Maybe it was a momentum killer, but it certainly isn't a bad album as the title of your thread may suggest.
