What's so hateful about the Rainbow Children lyrics? I've seen a lot of ppl say The Rainbow Children lyrics are discriminatory or hateful, but I've never gotten that.
What's so hateful or wrong with them? I'm agnostic, but I don't see anything particularly offensive about them. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Well there's the reason for your misunderstanding right there. TRC was chock full of religious lyrics. Lovesexy Funkateer

But I was raised a JW, so it's not like I don't understand everything on the album. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Then ya got me. The only reason I took offense to TRC was because lyrics were condoning a religion. Can't speak for anybody else. Lovesexy Funkateer

The only thing I don't like is that theocratic order stuff. I thought that was moreso primitive than hateful though.
Apparently, on the Kevin Smith DVD, one guy thought it was racist against white ppl. WTF? "It's time to come together, come together as one" is racist? The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

There's a lot of talk against the devil.
Very hateful and discriminatory words against the devil.

Also in "Family Name", the names that he gives to the "bad guys" are very "Jewish" sounding - Pearlman, Lynch, Rosenbloom and Goldstruck (which sounds like a reference to Goldstein or Goldburg) ??? Anyway, I still think the album is great. I don't read too much into the lyrics - after all, the final song preaches how we should "come together as one", so maybe all the songs before that are part of his journey towards that goal. I dont think he means that women arent smart enough to distinguish right or wrong. here he is merely relaying the Adam and Eve account were the devil went after eve first not beacuse she inferior but because she was "younger" less experience being on earth thatn the man. What is this supposed to mean...my people suffered worse than yours?...what are we talking about here..compartive atrocities??? whats the point???
I think what hes trying to say here is that at least you can trace your lineage to a peice of land which is something that many blacks in america wish they could do. but all in allit is just him acknowledging the struggles of his own people not dissrespecting others. "Sold 2 the one who can now mate the displaced bloodline with the white jailbait."
Personally I think that hes means this in a cultural sense. THe way urban styles in music and dress and otherwise have been intertwined to create the american culture "Every time I watch the other people news "...
I think you are knitpicking on this one. THe other people are simply the Big Media Machine. "There's a theocratic order now
This is how it's gonna b If u wanna b with me Ain't no room 4 disagree " He is talking about theocratic order in the biblical sense. THe Early Irsealites were a true theocracy ruled by God. And he is also playing onthe number three in the bible. Jah, Jesus, Holy Spirit....and so on. "First of all, the term "black and white" is a fallacy. It simply is another way of saying "this or that". Let's examine the term "this or that" in its ultimate form which is: "this" means the truth or "that which is resistant 2 it. A Human is a human. though we differ cosmetically. our differences a simply cultural. when we step out of that box and realize we are all god's children, then we all become a righteous majority. TRC has trick metaphor in it some of which i really dont fully get, but I dont really think its hateful. Musically its his best in years. Lyrics are challenging which is ok. But its stilla master work just like Lovesexy,Signothetimes, dirty mind and so on "Thinking like the Keys on Prince's piano, we'll be just fine"

Hell, some people may hate it to high heaven, but we're here still talking about it years later. I felt this is one of his best albums. I agree again. A wonderful piece of work. My favourite album. I can obviously see where the inferences come from but does it actually refer to the JW religion directly. I know it's inferred but the "Rainbow Children" are fiction. Also, others have mentioned that some of the lyrics might be related to the Mayte split and Manuella relationship ASWELL as drawing on his new found beliefs. Isn't it all just a though-provoking story not to be taken too literally? Religion is at the forefront, but as with Lovesexy GOD is the word used not Jehovah.

Yes, I'm very eager to hear what he'll come up with next as a spiritual statement, after the nostalgia-laden "Musicology."

Then it truly boils down to personal taste.
As good as TRC is, I wouldn't put it in my top 10 Prince albums. The only true gems on TRC are: The Sensual Everafter I don't care for instrumentals, but this is the best one he's done since Alexa De Paris. Last December Some of his best recorded guitar work, great vocals, and theme. The only downside is the suspicious absence of the holy spirit. I guess that was explained in the previous song before. Where as Lovesexy was SOLID all the way through. Lovesexy Funkateer
