NAACP to honor musician Prince February 17, 2005 11:07 AM EST LOS ANGELES, Feb 17, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The NAACP will honor Oscar- and Grammy-winning musician Prince at its upcoming Image Awards, Fox TV announced Thursday. The network said the civil rights organization would present Prince with its NAACP Vanguard Award during the 36th NAACP Image Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on March 19. Fox will televise the cerremony on March 25. The NAACP Vanguard Award is presented to a person "whose groundbreaking work increases understanding and awareness of racial and social issues." It has been only presented twice before -- to Stanley Kramer and Steven Spielberg. Prince won the Oscar for Best Original Song Score in 1984 for "Purple Rain." This is by far Prince's greatest award IMO because it gives props for humanitarian interests. Fame and fortune in itself can be shallow and vain but this award designates Prince as one who cares about justice and civil rights.
Because he ignored the flash and flattery of one award doesn't mean he'll turn his back on one that says volumes about his ideals, character and concern for others.  | |

It's gr8 for P that he's gettign this - but isn't it a bit meaningless after he already received a similar award in '96. I mean, what's this actually FOR, as opposed to that one? It sounds like they want to bu,p the profile of the awards by having P there, so they decide to give him a similar award again. Soryy for the cynicism, but it is a bit strange... "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

It's pretty common for him to make an appearance to accept a "special" award that is given to him. If he had something to promote or plug as it relates to his music, I'd say 100% that he would perform too. But he'll be there to accept the award. It was amusing to me...seeing people here debating on whether he was gonna make an appearance on the grammies this year. P ain't about to make an appearance on the same award show two years in a row. Don't expect to see P on the grammies again for another 9 or 10 years. Brother 9/15 | |
