I don't think it's that no one likes the set. Speaking only for me, I went through a lot of bullshit to finally end up buying it in the store(didn't get the fifth disc), only to find that he held back some of the good stuff and included things that just shouldn't have been on there. Why a remix of Love Sign, Dark, Loose and Pussy Control? WHY?? Why Tell Me How U Wanna B Done? WHY?? He changed Good Love, Crystal Ball and Movie Star and not for the better. WHY?? What's that little snippet of An Honest Man about? Poom Poom?? Poom Poom?!?! God almighty, there was such an opportunity with this set...

It was disappointing in those regards. Great only for The Truth.

hmmm Why don't we like CB? I can't speak for everybody but, let's start at the beginning...

1. The ordering process

I phoned in my order 1 year before the set was released, as it was going to be an "internet only" release. Imagine the look of shock and disgust, when I walk into Media Play, and see it's been sitting there for weeks.

Then the runaround I had to go through to get my money back, from 1-800 NEW FUNK.

2. Edited songs

Most of these songs were already in our collection, and in much better shape. In other words, they were complete, unlike most of them being cut short, for official release.

3. Remixes

Love Sign (Shock G's Silky Remix), So Dark , Tell Me How U Want 2 B Done, Get Loose, Pussy Control??? barf

They were better in their original forms.

Otherwise there are a few standouts, that we never heard before, that make it worthwile now:

Hide The Bone
Calhoun Square
What's My Name
She Gave Her Angels
Make Your Mama Happy
Goodbye

All those could've fit on 1 CD, and been released without hassle.

Keep in mind that your points are only valid for folks who either traded or bought bootlegs. To those of us who did not, we were able to hear these tracks with fresh ears (and with good sound quality) while getting them from the artist himself. I remember feeling the same way prodigalfan feels when I first got the set.

Pre-ordering and receiving CB, was kinda like eating a pile of dog-doo just to get a promised chocolate chip cookie... only to realize they use carob chips!

It was an extremely uneven collection, with some great jems, many horrible song choices and remixes, and way too much aggrivation to make it truly enjoyable.

Good, chewy cookies: razz
Calhoun Square
Days of Wild
Hide the Bone
Crystal Ball
Love sign
Crucial

Carob Chips: neutral
Interactive
Sexual Suicide
Good Love
The Ride

Doggie-doo: barf
The ordering process
PoomPoom
18 and Over
Tell Me How You Want To Be Done
Ripogodazippa, and much, much more!

I have heard this over and over again. To the point that I was really not going to buy it unless I got a really good price. And just like Emancipation, I am in love with it.

See? You gotta be a VIRGIN to really appreciate it. The fresh and innovating sound. Your first time was tainted by getting screwed over with 1800 funk.

I bought the set to finally get a good clean copy of "Last Heart". It was worth every penny.

I ended up liking "Sexual Suicide", which I had heard before on boot and hated. Interactive, The Ride, What's My Name and Hide The Bone are also good listens every now and then.

However, bullshiggity like "Make Your Mama Happy" and "Tell Me How You Want To Be Done", DaBang, P Control Remix, and "She Gave Him Angels" he could have left in the vault under a pile of dust.

I'm actually rediscovering Disc 2. That was some hot stuff on there. I've always loved Interactive but Good Love is the shizzznit, Plus She Gave Her Angels, CBS, Sexual Suicide and Crucial. Man, the whole disc is too good
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I LOVE Goodbye. That song is so beautiful. In fact, a friend of mine who doesn't like Prince really likes this song. It's one of my favorites of the whole collection.

Awesome! it's always amazed me the disdain for this set. yeah yeah I went through the Pre-ordering mess too but...I guess I was lucky...I didn't think it was all that bad and even still...."let it go" it was what 7 years ago now...phew!
and as for this song or that song is shit...it's all a matter of opinion...would I have rathered a more cohesive 2-disc set? No freakin' way! I'm glad he included all those songs, even if I don't like them all.
Glad you're enjoying them as much as you are...it's refreshing. biggrin

heard all 4 cd's and I give it a strong 9 (only 1 or 2 songs I got distracted on, but not enough for me to skip).

If I go to the trade board, do I have to give something up???? eek
I just want to buy. WHY CAN'T NPGMC DO WHAT IT IS SHOULD DO AND IS IN BEST POSITION TO DO??? Be *the* place to go to for Prince music. You can't tell me there aren't any bins full of CD's that never sold at Paisley Park. Even Media play has bins full of CD's that are in the "clearance" bin.

Sorry to vent. So if I go to the trade forum I have to be willing to give up something??? pout
