Guns N Roses had their Slash, Nirvana had their Dave Grohl, Marilyn Manson had their Twiggy, Funkadelic had their Bootsy Collins, No Doubt had their Tonay Kanal, The Stones had their Keith Richards and so on. They weren't the stars of the shows, but people loved them and they had fans highly interested in them as well.
But who does Prince have? No one people really care about. It's all about Prince and his hired help. Band, what band? What about Candy Dulfer? Surely a lot of folks know her as well as Prince. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Exactly-Prince has not held onto a band long enough for anyone to think of them like we think of Bootsy and Keith Richards. Only hardcore fans really get into the band members. You could easily argue that Maceo and Larry Graham are more famous then Wendy and Lisa ever were. The fact is that The Revolution were never as famous as Keith Richards, etc. Hell, Bobby Z. sat behind me at Prince at the Xcel last summer and no one knew who he was. "New Power slide...."

Prince is always going to surround himself with talented musicians. Renato, Rhonda and Blackwell could be gone tomorrow and he wouldn't miss a beat. And given his history of turnover it amazes me that this is still something of interest to people.
The only reason I was as attached to the Revolution as I was is because of their influence on the music. I don't think he's had a band since who have impacted the direction and sound of his music like they did.

The only reason people knew Sheila was because Prince made her famous. If it weren't for "Purple Rain" the movie no one would know the individual players in the Revolution. Case in point, when Prince played at the U of M campus for one of the celebrations Dr Fink, Bobby, and Brown Mark got up onstage. The hardcore fans knew them, but the casual fans had to ask who they were. Only Prince fans know the names of his band members-don't kid yourself. Larry Graham and Maceo are more famous than any of his other band members-except maybe Sheila E. [Edited 2/17/05 23:14pm] "New Power slide...."

CORRECTION: Wendy & Lisa was THE Revolution!!! 1) Without W&L, Purple Rain (The Title Track) would have never sounded as good as it did. 2) Without W&L, All Around The World In A Day (the album) would have NEVER existed. 3) Without W&L, some of the songs for Parade, & the 2 prequels for Sign 'O' The Time (The Dream Factory & The Crystal Ball) would have NEVER happen! When Prince made history back in the 1980's, it was The Revolution that was a special part of that legecy. Of all of the bandmembers, it was (and still is) W&L with the most to brag about! Now you (or any one reading this) please tell me any past or present members of the New Power Generation that had any kind of impact with Prince as Wendy & Lisa. It sounds more like the Prince I liked back in the day. To find that W&L were an intergral part of this CD is not surprising, since I do like the old Prince style better than the newer gansta glam, james brown sounding music of today. I recognize that today's music is good and I like it, but the older 80's sound makes me want to get up and dance! or pull over on the side of the road and get out of my car and dance. I just said that about CB, and now I find that it was recorded during the true golden era. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

I skipped 2 the end of the post, coz I got bored, but am I the only one feeling a bored deja-vu? In five years I'm sure we'll b reading on the org: "bring back the NPG", "this new badn needs the drumming skills and personality of JB", "what happened to that super-smooth horn section", "Rhonda could hold a supa-groove, this new bassist is only into grandstanding!" etc.
This is not my fave band, but that's coz Musicology is not my fave album (I like TRC tho). I still get chills when I hear P call Mace's name, even if the result is occasioally disappointing. Point is... stop moaning! Ur getting boring. (Oh, and as for the last comment: err that's because those songs were recorded around the time of Parade (actually just after if I'm not wrong), much of the CB stuff tho is from nearly 10 years later!) interesting....aimee mann once commented that wendy and lisa are two awesome (and talented) musicians....and if you listen to the wendy of revolution and the wendy of today you can hear a vast improvement in skills... but you might have a point, the three of them might have been content with being awesome experimentalist where they stopped perfecting their musical skills.. but today? i think it would be almost too easy for the revolution bandmembers to play what current music prince is making... just my HO... Co-sign. It was Prince's music that became less interesting after Wendy and Lisa's departure not theirs. And yes someone will say "Eroica was boring" blah blah blah, but just because you don't understand any complex music, that doesn't make it BORING. Prince's 90's material was pathetic really, save for the stuff he dug out of the vault, where as albums like Seal's or Meshell's Bitter were amazing pieces of music, now, WHO worked on those album's again? Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

I notice people saying that the current band doesn't perform or has personality - dead wrong IMO. Look at Blackwell twirl the sticks, watch Candy perform & sing & blow, watch Mike Phillips hold his note for 2 minutes, Mike Scott do his funky "pimp" dance, etc. It's goin' down y'all.
