I think the current band is fantastic. How can one not love Maceo, John or Rhonda? Renato is a great keyboard player and has played with many others. Some may be hired help as EWM stated, but they've been around for a few years now and I think they're great. Of course, the Revolution were the best and you all know how much we miss Tony Maceo, John and Rhonda kick ass!

I seriously doubt any band that Prince currently forms could satisfy the needs of nostalgia-filled purists. Folks will always want to compare them to a previous band that they think is "definitive". not here.....theres no nostalgia filled purist on this end of the puter...i've enjoyed rosie gaines.....ive enjoyed levi....ive enjoyed many other bandmembers...*this* version of the npg seems to be feeling a role that prince wants....musical perfection..sure, thats great and all..but, it can be a dry thing to watch... I gotta disagree. I like Rosie and Levi and all them too, but I simply love good music. I don't need tobe entertained. I dig this current band, and not just because they're so tight. They peak my curiosity because who knows what they're capable of. They're all pretty successful on their own, so if P takes them in a new direction, what will it sound like? That sort of thing. But the one person who brought some energy to the event was let go (Rad)....Prince seems to want to hog all the attention when he does a fullblown tour and thats fine...But if thats the case this current band will always live in the shadow of previous bands..... Well, I agree that the Revolution had more stage prescence than the current band (as did the 93-95 NPG), and NO band Prince has played with has topped the Lovesexy band!
That having been said, I DO think this band is one of the tightest ones he's ever had. Their musical prowess is truly amazing. Maceo and Candy are great, Renato is on par with Dr. Fink, and Blackwell is like watching an octopus play drums. No, they aren't as flashy, but they are still incredibly skilled Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. What difference does it make as far as what the band sounds like? What are Renato and Mike Scott supposed to do? They're both fine musicians who do what they get paid to do. It's a trip how some of us are still stuck in that 80's image-conscious mentality.
I guess Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead sucks too, since he ain't out there with aqua net sprayed hair and goofy sunglasses. One thing that made Prince's past bands so cool is that they all blended like a painting and had real character. Even the early NPG was better than what he has now. No one cares about these people. They're boring on stage. What he needs are younger, more energetic players, with their own individual characters. People seem 2 forget that P has great talent around him at all times and if he don’t he sure in hell know how 2 go out and get what he wants. Just like when he had Wendy with him on the Tavis Smiley show. He’s been known 2 have great musicians. People move on so let him do what he does best. When he records his music u get him, when he performs u get the live musicians. They work 4 P just like Wendy, Lisa, Dr Fink and the rest of his past musicians.

The current band is cool, but the lack personality and feel sorta
like just a backing band. They are all talented but no one is memorable like Wendy,or Matt Fink or even Tommy Barbarella and Rosie Gaines. . If you will, so will I

The main reason that people remember Lisa, Wendy and Dr Fink more is because of the film Purple Rain. Also, the doctors outfit on Fink helped. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

UncleGrandpa said: EvilWhiteMale said: I agree Blackwell is an amazing drummer, but the band as a whole sucks. They're nothing more than hired help. There's no family feel like with the Revolution or Lovesexy Band. Back then, each band member had a real personality and people knew who they were. If you mention Wendy, Lisa, Dr. Fink, Sheila E.,etc. people still remember them as members of Prince's band. Who the hell cares about Renato or Mike Scott?
It would be cool if he could get one hot band again and keep them for a while. I am in agreement here with EWM, aside from JB and Maceo ( who has his own legacy outside of NPG ) no one really cares much for the rest of the band. It's absolutely true about Dr. Fink ( like he's known by any other name ), Sheila E ( well known touring musician, but her main fame was with him ) and Wendy & Lisa, they're synonymous with the Prince Legend. You could sit next to Renato at the bus stop and never recognize him. Dang that is true, he doesn't have the noteriety, that is because he wasn't in purple rain, and today's band is really low key in videos. They really seem more like hired band as opposed to the Revolution, which seemed more like buds or partners to Prince (making music). BUT I love to listen to Renato play, his range of type of music is broad, he not only got funky but he is played mood/ smooth jazz very well also during set changes. I did't figet or check my watch one time when Prince was off of stage for those quick changes. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

You know an artist has a cool band when people chant the members names as they get on stage or play a solo. Guns N Roses had their Slash, Nirvana had their Dave Grohl, Marilyn Manson had their Twiggy, Funkadelic had their Bootsy Collins, No Doubt had their Tonay Kanal, The Stones had their Keith Richards and so on. They weren't the stars of the shows, but people loved them and they had fans highly interested in them as well.
But who does Prince have? No one people really care about. It's all about Prince and his hired help. Band, what band? "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

It's like, I'm sure the NPG could kick The Revolution's fucking asses as far as pure musicians go, but no one cares; they'd still rather see The Revolution perform than his current band. The Revolution felt like a true Prince band; they were like part of the Prince story. Prince's new band is just musicians hired to play for him. There's no chemistry or unity felt there. JB aside, it's just a bunch of normal ppl who happen to perform his songs with him. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

The last version of the NPG I can remember feeling like a real band was the '95 NPG, when you had Mayte dancing onstage as P's sexy sidekick and Tommy B. playing the keyboards with an actual personality. I miss that. Give me music personalities, not just every day ppl who can pick up an instrument and play correctly. Hell, Prince himself is known for his persona almost as much as his music. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

maybe this is because prince has been going 26 years or something now, so obviously people are just gonna know him more than his band, who have been around 5 years tops. prince has a small hardcore now, and we all know who they are. in the 80s he had millions of fans therefore plenty of people to get interested in wendy and lisa. plus w&l were very photogenic in that it was an interesting team for the media to pick up on, wendy lisa and prince together. plus people like sheila E because they released hit records, because prince wrote with them etc and his name meant airplay and sales. now it's different.

The reason that The Revolution and Lovesexy band felt like a family is because there were movies that featyred them. There was more of a focus put on them that way. If the Musicology band had a full length feature film with them in it-you'd feel that they were like a family as well. "New Power slide...."

Nope. agreed....the only person who even attempted to connect to the audience during these shows was Candy..and i give her credit for it...At one show Rhonda sat with her back to the audience and played the entire shot (except when instructed by prince to do the lil pimp skit) sitting her ass down..What the and Candy..well, i give her credit but...well.....thats about it.
