17 Days

Ya know you just forget to play some somgs for a while and last night I was playing some of my old vinyl's and plut 17 Days on, oh man this song is so good, how can I have forgotten how good!

Would love to hear anyone else's thoughts on it.

"Here I sit in my lonely room, looking for some sunshine.
All i've got are 2 cigarettes and this broken heart of mine"

I just love the intro all whirring then the bass kicks in.....oh I have to go play it again!!
In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

Amazing song and would've fit in perfectly on the Purple Rain album.

Goddamn was this guy at a creative high at this time!

When I was in school, the cafeteria had a giant jukebox and everyday I would play 17 days, erotic city, and when doves cry. After a while, a meanie bounced into it and scratched the 17 days (he was suspended).

Anyway... i bought a replacement for the jukebox and would pay to hear my own record at lunch! razz

One of Prince's best lyrics.

My all time favorite. Interesting that this song was supposed to be on the new Vanity 6 album and later on the Appolonia album but Prince decided to record it as his own and make it a B side. If you listen to the lyrics it really has more of a girlish vibe. Wonder if there is a vanity or apples version circulating somewhere.

An awesome track. The arrangement is amazing and the bassline (especially) is wicked.

Definitely one of my favorite P songs ever. The groove is great, that little guitar riff is excellent, and I really love the lyrics too.

besides hearing 17 days on the radio, there was this little ice cream parlor in town that my buddies and I would go into..
they had 17 days on the jukebox and we would play video games and pump quarters and listen to all the Prince b-sides in the machine..
17 days was a nugget that I didn't get to listen to as much as I wanted to..

Actually, I still haven't heard it enough in my life...

a big thumbs up!!!!!

17 Days was never intended for Apollonia 6 or Vanity 6. First off, it was recorded after Vanity had left the Prince fold. The only connection to Apollonia/Vanity is Brenda singing background on it. Apollonia never sang this song. It was written with Brenda in mind ("I've got 2 cigarettes..."), but it was always going to be a Prince song.

There isn't an official extended version of the song but one exists. The extended parts consist of Brenda talking over the music. Similar to the way that Wendy and Lisa do on the extended version of Computer Blue or the way Brenda does on Some Kind Of Lover on Apollonia 6.

The bottom line is it was never intended for release by Apollonia 6. It was always a Prince song.

In my opinion, it is possibly his best B side and would have been perfect on his Purple Rain album. This is a great argument about why PR should have been a double album.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

if it was up to P Purple Rain probably would have been a double album, hus previous 1999 was a double, Warner probably woudnt let him

I stand corrected that it was never intended for Vanity but I'm not entirely wrong that this was going to find itself on an Appolonia Album with Brenda singing the lead. In fact there is a small tie to Vanity. Apparently prince revamped a song called "Moral Majority" from a Vanity outake and recorded 17 days...again w/ Brenda singing the lead.

Anyone ever heard of this outake? I wonder how close it is to 17 Days. By the way I got this info from an article by Per Nilsen with help from David Magdziarz.

I have heard that same story that this was intended for VANITY 6, but reclaimed by Prince. That second Vanity 6 album was gonna be the bomb

17 DAYS
TAKE ME WITH U
MANIC MONDAY
GLAMOROUS LIFE
...

all killer tracks that Prince decided to give to other artists instead of Vanity/Apollonia!

Moral Majority (a Vanity outtake) was reworked on Sunday January 1 1984. That day he was also working on We Can Funk (then titled We Can Fuck). Brenda sang background on Moral Majority. I don't recall if she sang lead, but I'm pretty sure that she didn't. A few days later (Sunday Jan. 8, 1984), 17 Days was reworked at Sunset Sound with Prince singing lead, and Brenda singing background. I don't think she ever sang lead on it. The next time 17 Days was seriously worked on was on Sunday March 18th, 1984 when Prince added some overdubs and mixed it. It was never placed on a compilation for Apollonia 6, nor was Apollonia herself involved in the song from what I can recall.

This gets a little confusing, but I hope that clears up some of the mystery.

"17 Days" is NOT Prince's best B-side ever ("She's Always In My Hair" gets that distinction) but it is one of my favorites as well. The bass line is hitting and I love that swirling electric guitar intro.
