The Musicology Era... Officially Over After Tonight

A year ago...Prince coming down those steps with the gitar playing the opening strains of Purple Rain...the audience going wild. The best TV apparance in years and the start of something huge. 365 days of massive press exposure, music on the radio (at least R and B radio), and of course that awesome concert tour that showed that not only would people pay to see Prince, they would pack and sell out large venues. It started with the Grammy's and, in my mind, ends with the Grammy's tonight.

Prince may win one award tonight. Two if the stars are aligned. Usher will steamroll through the awards as he has the whole year. Musicology, the album, will not get a push like it would if it won several major awards. There will be no more singles released, no more videos. The live CD/DVD, if it ever comes out, probably won't make too many waves even though it could sell a little if Sony or Columbia or whoever release an acoustic single of one of the pop classics, "Little Red Corvette" maybe. It worked for Eric Clapton with "Layla" so why not? But it too will go away.

Musicology is an era that may prove to be a pivotal point in Prince's career or it might just be blip that just reminded everyone that, once upon a time, there was this funky badass named Prince who made some really good singles in the 80's and 90's. The tour reminded a lot of the people who had fallen off, who had left the 3 million strong, that Prince was once vital. Will they stick around for the next step? Will anyone besides us care if the Revolution reunites or if Prince makes another film or if his next album is funk or pop or rap or country? Was 2004 just a fling with a former flame for the masses or did it open the door for some back into the Prince universe?

It was a nice year, 2004. But the Grammy's closes up shop on Musicology, the album, the tour, the experience. What's next, P?

If The Dvd is released, I'm sure it will sell well!
Think about it, the #1 Tour in 2004!
Seen by nearly 2million ppl strong!

All the hits, atleast mainstream's favorites!
Prince in rare-form, with the tightest band since the revolution!
Well and The Gold Era (NPG-BAND)!

But the fact is I do believe Prince will release this Dvd soon and it will be a best seller, just as ONA LIVE did a few years ago...when it debuted #2 I believe on the video charts.

So I'm looking forward to that release and also Prince to score atleast 1 award tonight!

Wishing you the best Prince!
Congrads...see ya on the road in 2005...hopefully!

who knows though? if he gets a couple of grammies maybe it will kickstart some more radio play and million days video will be released?
not saying it would be a success but i think it's abit "too" definite to say it ends tonight.

plus yeah the tour was the number one of the year, a full on dvd package would sell fuck loads. ONA Live went in at number 2 but didn't sell enough for gold i don't think.
musicology live would sell loads if done properly

what if cinnamon girl wins a grammy and starts getting airplay? who knows

personally i'm inclinded to agree about singles and videos simply because it seems like theres a gearing up towards the next thing. but i do think success tonight could change that.

I agree with u. There were some projects that I liked, but nothing that I was in love with (even Musicology was not worthy of the "L" word). It is kinda funny 2 me that radio stations across the country continue 2 play stuff from last year (2003) than 2004. I still hear "The Way U Move" and "Hey Ya" almost as much now as I did a year ago.

I hope 2005 is a better year. I am glad that the year of Usher is over. It was OVERKILL for him. I am sooooo glad he didn't win the Album of the Year. He said that was the one award he really wanted.

I agree with both of you that 2004 really sucked musicwise and this year's Grammy's proved that with the exception of Prince and all the success with Musicology, I'm biased. I hope that in 2005, someone dares to be different and take the road less traveled with music. We need someone to come out to kick the pants off of the music industry.

Back to the subject, if the Musicology Era has ended, then what a way to end it. With 2 more Grammy's in the bag, it's nothing more than miraculous.

Here's to the next big project but also for the big year that our main man had in 2004. biggrin
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I still think the whole year was.. even underground, not even the mainstream music was any good..

I think about 4 or 5 albums out of that whole year made any type of list whatsoever with me

As I said before- 2004 was simply the year the world woke up to Prince. He's actually going along strong as always-it's not like Prince really "came back" in 2004. I really dug "musicology" but it wasn't vastly better or worse than anything he has done in the last 10 years. Public tastes just decided they wanted some Prince. 2004 just cemented his legacy and he is now recognized as one of the all time greats.

I agree with everything you said in that post, although, I'd argue it was the media that wanted a slice of the Prince pie in 2004 (and he a slice of the media pie), which led to the public buying the album and tickets.

Agreed. The "public" whose taste is whatever the media dictates also went to see Prince.
