"Prince was like MC Hammer on speed" eek (quite funny actually .... boxed)...Eighties confusions... bless them.

Sounds like the girl in question is taking herself way tooooo seriously. You wear them and enjoy!

Well aside from the distinct possibility that this person is just crazy, there may be some logic to her madness. She may be realizing some frustration from the fact that white people adopt black musical genres after initially shumming them. Rock and roll in the 50s was called race music because black peope invented it. Certain TV and radio stations would not play it. White record executive remade hits by black artists with white singers to make it acceptable to the white audiences (eg Pat Boone singing Tutti Frutti or damn near every thig that Elvis ever did). The same has happened with hip hop (no where near a great loss to black people in my opinion but thats another essay). Rap was not commercial and mainstream until the Beastie Boys and Vanilla Ice. Eminem perpetuates this social anamoly. Alas entire genres that were invented by blacks - rock and jazz - are hardly supported by them. I can remember being criticized for listening to punk and new wave when I was a high school kid because it was "white boy music".

While there are various social and histroical dynamics involved, the ultimate responsibility - if there is any - lies with the black community. This music is yet another part of our culture that we let slip away. I can go see Wynton Marsalis in the middle of Washington DC (a city that is still mostly black) and 90% of the audience is white. Prince is aware of this. I recall the fervor after he made a comment during a Tavis Smiley interview about the racial makeup of his concert audiences during the peak of Purple Rain. The screaming teenage white girls in the fromt row were not there when I was going to see him on the Controversy tour in 82. There were also not there through the later half of the 90s when people were writing Prince off as an eccentric internet has-been.

The fac tis that Prnce has alway had a more diverse following than any black aritsts since Sly and Hendrix (the emphasis is on the word "artists"; not "performers" thus Micheal Jackson is intentionally omitted here).

That person was wrong to say anything to you. I always loved a Prince concert because there were all kinds of people there. In a world where there are few things that unified us, thank God for great music that transcends race and hate.

Somebody might be misunderstanding the whole idea behind diversity of opinion... Blacks and Whites may have different opinions of things, men & woman, straight & gay - which isn't quite the same as saying that Blacks can only study or emulate other Blacks, or Whites w/ Whites!

That's cultural segregation! lol

If there was the all black people would listen to it and obviously not only black people listen to Prince.

Good point! thumbs up!

Completely concur clapping
As to the ignorant, unsolicited statement, the bes response would have been to give her a hug and apologize for ignorance

When I was in the States a black homeless man praised me for wearing a Prince t-shirt. He thought I was "ill" for wearing it. You know I got soul.

Shite like this lets me know that we as a people have a long ways to go before people, all of different races can live how they wanna live with no shit.

I hate random, unsolicited comments. Especially the negative ones--

With any hope, she will find out after 40 years of preaching racial separation that her great grandparents were black--
wink

the karma and the irony that exists in the world is not to be taken lightly.
