i always thought 1999 was such a landmark album for Prince ...

(not that the others didnt have "gems" .... ) but with 1999 all of a sudden it seemed like Prince was "grown up " .... cool

MIGUELGOMEZ

This may sound weird but the "cymbal" work on this song drives me nuts. I love it. I also wish I could understand all of what he says when he's talking. He says something like "I never tasted your ice cream, baby you're the star, the number one supreme." The rest I can kind of make out but not the very beginning it's too low.

I LOVE THE VIDEO!!!

The song is amazing, 1999 doesn't really have a singular centerpiece, because it's so big and several songs are longer than average, but this is the longest clockin' in at just under 9 and half minutes, the longest Prince track officially released under his own thus far (I presume, without checking). On any other album, this would surely be the centerpiece.

I love how the song, literally, climaxes... from fasten your seat-belts onwards. Kind of like a Funkadelic space ride, yet not 70s futuristic, but 80s futuristic, cold, robotic and sexual.

cool

This song is pure Prince. I love this track.
I feel it's very underated.

The live version at the birthday show 86 is simply magnificent.
I just can't believe all the things people say !

I've said it once and I'll say it til the day I die.1999 is a masterpiece! You can see Prince's vision for the project, even without videos.

Favorite track-Lady Cab Driver
Favorite video-Automatic
Favorite lyric-"I dream of how you kiss me.not with your lips, but with your soul.with you I'm never bored.talk to me some more.I can hear you.I'm going to have to torture you now."

I totally agree. It's definitely underrated. Some people are actually put off by the length of the song. Too me, the song is perfect exactly the way it is, length and all. biggrin

Wow, this song must get the most threads dedicated soley to any one song. It's almost a weekly occurrence.

"Automatic" was my fav Prince tune from '82 to '88. Nowdays, sometimes I prefer "Something in the Water" over it -- kinda depends what mood I'm in.

thumbs up! ...and don't 4get 2 give this a go with nothing else on but yo' headphones! music
