A few days ago I read someones report of hearing so called obscure Prince tunes while in the Navy, stationed in the Persian Gulf. At 2-3 a.m. while on watch they had the radio on and radio station played Dorothy Parker and Rock Hard in A Funky Place. The "sickness" of it is that whenever Prince music is on a public media outlet then our ears prick up. Sometimes we even remember the time and place where we were when certain songs were played.This becomes part of our emotional memory. This is what I call "the sickness". Sure there are Rolling Stones fans or J-Z, Bush, or any other artist fans. The thing that makes hearing Prince music in the media different is that it seemed like his music is always something of a rarity due to the sometimes explicit sexual nature of his music and image. So whenever Prince was or is being played always not exactly a revelation but lets say a scoop.Even the heyday of his accessible radio play seemed numbered or special. Those who came into Prince recently or who feel me on this, heres an offical salutations:welcome to the disease.

I remember hearing 'Adore' at 2 am, coming home from a club
back in the day. I was almost in tears I was so happy.

Whenever 1999 or Kiss are on (As those are the only two songs I've ever heard on radio by him where I'm from), I crank up the volume, and WILL NOT change the channel, even though I sick of both of them.

The sickness is real and prevailent. My ears even prick up when connecting artists play. Like, oh, I don't know.....

Ok, if say, No Doubt was on the radio, I'd think "Hey, they did a Prince song on their newest CD. I better not change the channel.

How about this. Does anyone watch something on a Music Channel or whatever, and you think that perhaps there'll be a Prince mention in it, so you watch through a one or two hour special just in the hope that his name is mentioned? I do, and it's sad. Sometimes it pays off. I was once watching an MTV best contests ever thing, and they spent 5 or 6 minutes on the UTCM contest. It was great. Other times I just kick myself for trying.

Like there was a Smashing Pumpkins thing on once, and when I came on they talked about John Melvoin's death, so I hung around to see if they'd mention Prince's name. Isn't that sad?? Oh and by the way, they didn't.

Anyways, in answer to your question, yes I do have a life, but when I sit my ass on the couch, it can stay there for quite a while. I just don't get enough chances to sit my ass down anymore.

i've had "the disease" for a long time. i remember back in the 80s, i used to leave the radio on at night while i slept, and i would literally wake up from sleep when a Prince song would come on.

i especially clearly remember waking up in the middle of the night because "Purple Rain" was playing on the radio.

it happened with other P songs, too, so i know my waking wasn't just coincidence, but i really recall those times waking up and hearing PR.

Back in the day I used to do this with MTV and the radio --which caused me to be a radio flipper to this day

I never hear prince on the radio(well maybe when they play little red corvette or raspberry beret)....i hear him on the digital cable music channels we have and sometimes when im watching T.V. right quick i catch a old video.

That is part of what made hearing Prince on the radio sort of like breaking the rules. He wasnt your average everyday pop star.

Yes, I must admit, I have this disease.

My ears prick at the mention of "prince" on the radio or tv. They could be talkin about Prince Charles or 'prints' of something or other but my ears prick just in case it is news about the Prince. Same with newspaper headlines.

I'll just kick it & watch my videos's & laugh at how far beyond he is then anything before or after..

I wonder how appreciative people will be if I sneak some Prince goodies in there late at night? A little "The Beautiful Ones". Maybe "Scandalous" or "Adore". Hell, maybe even some "If I Was Your Girlfriend".



That is the gist though...in my original post the person heard the obscure songs in the wee hours. Now if those songs you want to program were played in the drive time or afternoon, folks would remember and crash their cars etc. Nevertheless, do it. In essence, those songs were meant to be not for prime time listening. It makes them more special.

I have the sickness...since 1982.
I used to watch MTV, hoping to see one of his videos(which I usually did) until it was my bedtime then I would switch to the radio.
To this day whenever I hear Prince on the radio I have to turn it up.
The other day I was in a dollar store and they actually played "17 days", I almost had a heart attack.

Same thing with today. I'm just watching and hoping for a website or something, and I can't wait to be back at PP.

If the day came when Prince stoped making music and giving shows, there would be no other musician that could take his place in my book.
