I don't understand something in the article...it says Prince sold 90 something million in ticket sales, yet he only made 56 million. Is that a net figure?

The 56 million is what Prince netted, yes... nod...the 90+ million is what the concert grossed overall.

I think it was far more just the momentum started by his Grammy performace with Beyonce...for a whole crapload of Americans, that was the first time they've "attended" a Prince concert in maybe a decade, perhaps ever...and he blew them away. It was like free advertising, saying "you like that??...then come to the show, you'll get that and a shitload more"...and of course, he was right. From there, it was pure word of mouth and constant rave reviews in the press after each stop. Prince has a helluva lot of people who really do love his work, whether past or present...he just needed to remind a lot of people that he's worth the evening out. The low ticket price sure didn't hurt, either...it was a low-risk proposition for anyone who found themselves saying "Damn, Prince was hot!" after seeing him on the Grammys...and that superb guitar solo at the RRHOF only propelled the momentum further...

I really doubt the Musicology tour's success was due primarily to people freaking out at the idea that they won't be able to hear "Take Me With U" live ever again.

Exactly, Byron!

I think this is also the reason why he never took it to Europe (Asia and Australia will always sadly have to wait!!!)
The ticket prices in Europe (in Germany, especially) are highly priced. It stems from a certain tax musical acts have to pay for venues. Therefor, I forsee another perhaps-larger-than-recent-years-scale-concert-tour over here, as well as A and A, in the next year(s).
He's made his dent in the red-white-and-blue again, and it's just a matter of verylittletime before he brings it everywhere AGAIN

Then, again, have another beer with me and we'll discuss...

What's so cool about this is how effortless Prince made the whole album and tour seem.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

See this means much more than having a number one album.

It shows that you can make MORE money and profits as an Independent than with a major.

Please, name me 5 independents who would actually fill out a mid-size arena...

(And, no cheating - I mean independents from the beginning, not ones who have become famous while being with a major)

You need majors !!!

This just comes to show that it's still more profitable to run a circus than make artistically adventurous records.

You need majors when you start out. The way Prince used Sony for the maketing and distrubition was a genius move. He was able to get the videos on MTV, the CD in the and people in the seats. In addtion, he owns the master and got to keep all of profit on the CD.

One of the main reasons why Prince had such a big tour is all that stuff about playing the hits for the last time. It drew a lot of casual fans out of the woodwork with the notion that this was the last time they would get to hear Purple Rain etc. It was almost touted as a 'farewell' tour. Madonna, Elton John etc didn't need to say that this would be the last time they would be playing their hits to get huge audiences - they play their hits on every tour so people know what to expect. With Prince, you often don't.

So whether he can maintain that popularity with following tours which aren't so hit laden, I doubt. However he is well known as a tried and tested fantastic performer, so he will always do pretty well on live tours. And either way it doesn't matter to me, if I get chance to see him live, I'll see him whatever the set-list.

Well put. I also think since P did alot more press, "industry" shindigs, and the like, he (re)gained a larger following. Plus with the '80's so hot now, the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain (shoulda called it "The Purple Rain 2.0 Tour) gave the project a big push. Lots of different factors involed, but it's about time he got his due. cool

Does anyone know where I can find the complete list? I am interested in knowing where Britney, Jay Z and a few other people placed on the list or if they placed at all.

You need Majors if you want to be a superstar, But you don't need a major to make a lot of money in music.

And you ask me to name five, well obviously you don't follow electronic music. I can name ten people that will fill up a major stadium not just a mid size venue. All of these guys are not only Indepemndents but they distribute their own music also and most people don't have any idea who they are. They are D.J.'s/producers.

Richie Hawtin ( Plastikman)
Derrick May
Jeff Mills
Tiesto (who produced the music for the last Olympics)
Robert Hood
Mike Banks ( founder of Underground resistance, An completely underground label that's been making profits for 20 plus years and won a major law suit against Sony music over copyright infriugment.

These are the bigger names. I can name other that make a really good living without majors.

Wow, you got me there. Indeed, I only knew 2 of them... Did not know that they could fill a stadium tour... Here in Europe, Jeff Mills will probably be "playing" clubs, mainly as a DJ...

I gotta laugh when i hear this crap. Comeback trail please.... and throwing the so called comeback into a "metallica" type comeback? Even worse.

I don't get u guys. I love Prince as much as the next freak and I've been listening to him all the way, but if 2004 was not a comeback then what the ***** is?! The guy was off the radar tottaly and then was right back on top. Just cause we still listen doesn't mean the world is, and that's what journos are talking about when they talk about comebacks.

Well what you call a circus I call a great concert. The ablilty to put a good show is in short supply now a days.

If you think millions of people would come out to she the "The Rainbow Children" you need to come out of your fantasy world.
