Just want to add my tuppence -
There were some posts at HQ that I personally felt were OTT (on both sides of the argument). However, there were also posts that debated the situation reasonably. The issue of who actually holds the copyright on the videos is a major point - it's highly unlikely that P or his camp have any control over any WB era stuff, so one would suspect that his representatives cannot demand that the material not be offered for download. However, HQ is not financially able to fight it, and as the streaming videos are still (at the moment) "allowed" it's probably better not to fight. As to the images - yep, NPG stuff they more than likely control so it's within their rights to demand is removal. Petty, as there is no financial gain to HQ and no financial detriment to P, but that's life. Same with the NPG logo. However, as to the symbol, I would think that they cannot justify demanding it's removal. Prince insisted that he had changed his name to this symbol, so even if it is trademarked/copyrighted it is perfectly reasonable to use it in reference to P.
The Sam Jennings business - the post at HQ was something like "They NPGMC under the supervision of Sam Jennings has demanded...". Now, I've read interviews where Sam Jennings makes reference to his role in the site, so I can't see how this is detrimental or unfair. He runs the NPGMC. For all we know, the letters from NPGMC might even have been from Mr. Jennings.
Since the first picture furore between HQ and NPGMC they seem to have backed off of that one - they only demand that no "illegal" Musicology pics be posted. However, I can see a time when they change that opinion and again start going after any fansite that hosts pix of Prince, whether thay hold the copyright or not. No doubt they'll start with HQ again, but I am sure that P.Org will eventually come into their sights.
Well, that was more like a quid. Keep the change.

Are you prodigal over there too? I don't remember seeing that name over there but from what you said here, I remember those words. My quake name is/was stymie. wink

NOOOO!!! That is NOT me. Gosh I am not *THAT* mean. I am kcam213. And I do remember arguing with you "Stymie". I meant to use Prodigalfan over there too but forgot and registered using my regular web name. And now I can't change my screenname. So that is why I use 2 different ones.
I was the one that posted the case of Sony vs Universal Studios about the court case of taping live televised programs and copy right infringement rulings.
And I did some name calling, purple koolaid drinkers and sheep. redface
I am quite ashamed of my behavior now. And I knew I would be while I was doing it. But don't you ever get so mad and know that you are going to say something that you know later that you are going to have to apologize for, but you can't stop yourself from saying it anyway? neutral
No, prodigal. I didn't think you were Violette. lol I kinda figure you were kcam. Amd believe it or not, I'm not a spy or narc. lol Hey, if you feel that way about folks at the club, that's cool. Don't apolgize if that's the way your truly feel about it. It's your opinion. Just like people feel about the quake, it's how I feel about the club. I think what we have to remember when we talk to or talk about each other, we all belong to more than one fansite.

For all you know, Finess has permission to do so.

Riiiight. Come on, do you really believe that? From a guy that doesn't even allow someone to use his symbol on a website that isn't making money? Finess is a bootlegger plain and simple. He repackages commercially available music, sells it, and makes money off of it. It's astonishing to me that he hasn't been sued.....yet.

What is the Finess haterizm...[b]MANY[\b] DJs do this very thing on street level and most artist support BECAUSE it gets the music out the street.

I would say mind ya business.

I and many other young fans wouldn't even know about alot
of Prince's less mainstream or older albums and videos. confused

I totally agree. I personally enjoyed the video downloads, and they were originally aired/broadcast on public airwaves. Man... what next? confused

First, I'm not sure that "most" artists support bootlegging their material, but that's not the point. The point is that Prince doesn't support bootlegging their material, especially their material that is commercially released.

I would say mind ya business.

it's all lies! TOFKA is a double agent spy pretending to be one of the bad guys on the good side, when the whole time she's a rogue agent for the kinda bad-good guys who wanna take down the bad guys by using the good guys, who are really the bad guys according to TOFKA but nobody's supposed to know that except for Prince, and she's going to take them all down after she retrieves the three chains o' gold from their new safe hiding place at DOLLYWORLD! oh, and i've literally SEEN her putting on a wig and sunglasses before she logs on to HQ!!! she has thousands of secret disguises! and she has microphones built into her earrings! and she has a collapsable rocket-luge hidden in her purse so that in case she gets caught, she can make a quick escape! i've seen it all! omfg nod

Anxiety, have you seen the movie a Beautiful Mind? You know the part where the professor is giving the lecture and he starts noticing these guys in grey suits discreetly advancing toward the stage, and then one says "Doctor, please come with me.... no one is going to hurt you"?
Well, "Anxiety, please come with me... no one is going to hurt you."

Well, obviously I don't know as many 'artists' as you, so I'll just have to take your word for it. rolleyes

Let's say that I made a 'greatest hits' cd of Prince music.
Now let's say that I put up a website and start selling these CD's for $10 bucks each. Ya think that's a copyright violation?

Let's say I own a CD store and I start selling them in there. Ya think that's a copyright violation?

Now let's say I copy Madhouse 8 on CD and start selling that too. In fact, let's say I make a copy of every Prince CD ever released, and sell my own copies. How about that one?

Anything sinking through Beuller?

oh lawd.....you really thought you needed to break it down. You really missed the point huh?

If you are unaware of the street level selling of mix tapes, etc then that's on you. Do you think artist would sue Kid Capri, Funkmaster flex back in the day before they became famous.....artists appreciated the street cred....

MY POINT was..its none of YOUR business. Its between finess and whomever wants to address it with him. The fact that you feel you need to get involved states that you have too much time on your hands. Let whatever artist that wants to sue finess, do that.

I'm sure Prince has never even heard of the site. But it would be morally wrong for me to not inform someobody of something that I know to be happening.

Either way, if he has, as has been suggested some sort of arrangement worked out, there's nothing to fear. But after talking with Brother Jules about the legality of mix tapes, I'm fairly certain that there's not.
