Shockadelica

I just found out the lyrics in Shockadelica were inspird by Troy Beyer the actress he was seeing at the time. She was the girl in the Sexy M.F. video. Apparently she kinda spooked him and he thought she was kinda witchy.

confused My recollection is that the song was written in response to Jesse Johnson's album of the same name, which didn't contain a title track. Prince recorded "Shockadelica" to proove that you shouldn't have an album named "Shockadelica" without a song of the same name.

Kind of a bitch move on Prince's part really. The song is about Troy but the title he got from Jesse. Prince told Jesse that since his album was going to be called Shockadelika it should have a song on it with the same title. Jesse turned that idea down and then Prince got pissed and a rushed his song out to make it look like Jesse took the title from him. Prince is lucky that some old associate never kicked his ass lol

Its a mindblowingly funky track! I remember it first being played on Capital Radio Drivetime in 1987, I was stuck in traffic and couldnt believe my ears! Just show you the impact of Prince then if a b side can get played on mainstream radio! probably also shows how far Capital have fallen since then (for those londonners out there!)

I didn't think Troy was on the scene until at least 91. Shockadelica can't be about her.

It was written around the time he split up with Susannah. It would make much more sense if it was about her.

Yes Prince first met her in L.A. 1986 and started seeing her way back then. She is such as sexy motherfucker P wasn't satisfied with just one stint dating her. He needed her in the early ninites too. Oh Troy In the words of Prince "You just can't leave her alone!"

Sweetie, you do know Prince was seeing other women throughout that time don't you? I mean Susannanh was his main girl but far from his only girl. I mean Prince was a huge rock star then. His opportunies were plentiful at that time.

Krystal666, do you remember where you read that it was about Troy?

I read that too, and commented on it so in a similar thread on HQ, but after briefly flicking through both DMSR and The Vault, I couldn't find any reference to it, but I do remember reading it just as you described in your first post.

Yep. It is in DMSR by Per Nelson page 214.

"...in September 1986, Prince taped a song called "Shockadelica" in his home studio. The lyrics were inspired by Troy Beyer whom Prince was seeing at the time. "Prince said directly to me that she was somewhat 'witchlike' and that she scared him because she was kind of spooky", recalls Rogers."

She was the piece of ass in the Sexy MF video, and also presented the Ryde Dyvyne TV Special (a TV live performance special to promote the prince album/related artists at the time - Rosie, Mavis, Carmen etc).

Maybe she was a fuck-buddy if she was around on and off all that time razz

Exactly. It still amazes me that people automatically assume that just because a song was written or recorded between 1984 and 1987 that is was about Susannah Melvoin.

Jeezmoflip... I'm agreeing with Krystal eek

:

Who assumes that then?

Or are you assuming what you think other people are assuming?

None of us know anyway. But a good assumption could be it was about someone he was now feeling bitter about. Based on when it was recorded (around the time of them calling off their engagement), its as good a guess as any!

Whilst DMSR is a great source of information, it to has alot of assumption.

Ahhh, but your assuming that the assumptions made in DMSR are based upon assumptions

you really shouldn't assume so much SquirrelMeat wink

Actually, I'm assuming his miss-assumption about my assumption is an assumption influenced by Pers assumptions, based on Susan's comments! biggrin

Re-read what you posted. Besides why would Susan Roger need to assume any thing, she was there. She and Prince worked closely together. Per documented what someone else stated as fact.

Jesse Johnson was bad-mouthing Prince all over TV and in interviews at the time. That's why Prince bitch-slapped him with the song.
