So do you think Prince will sink back into being obscure from the mainstream?

Now that Prince has had his rise to fame once again, how long do you think it'll last? The likes of The Boss, Dylan, MJ, Janet, and many others seem to have come back to their fame at one time or another. Its been ok for the general public to be Prince fans yet again. Those of us who have been with Prince for 20 years plus have seen some pretty interesting times from him.

I'm hoping that he's created a new fan base to keep the purple momentum going strong, but lets face it...this is Prince we're talking about. With fingers crossed on hopes of a brilliant follow-up to Musicology I have a feeling he'll pull through quite well. These days I'd say Prince has become...well...more stable. The huge bankroll that he currently has at his disposal should keep him focused on future projects.

All the rumors flying around about "Old friends" on his next album is working to his advantage. Lets just hope he comes through in one way or another.

Prince has entered the "legend" phase . What I mean by that is, the general public is finally starting to understand just how talented Prince is-he's getting his props.

Because he spent most of the 90's battling Warner Bros, and changed his name to a symbol, he slipped underground and I was fearful that Prince would never get his proper respect. However, now he sort of has ended up where he might have been had he not slipped of the radar in the mid 90's.

Looking back, changing his name, fighting Warners, and becoming an independant major artist has actually added positively to Prince's legend. At the time folks thought he had lost mind, but now it is just another case of him being a maverick and a groundbreaker. While his contemporaries, if he has any, have gotten stuck spinning the wheels (Madonna), or on the verge of self destructing (MJ), Prince seems to have reached a peak in his career only trancended by 1984. That being said, I think Prince made a lot more $$$$ this year than ever before (including '84).

Personally,I don't think Prince's fame has ever really dwindled. He was always an A list celeb. However, this year he cemented his legend into the "of all time" category. Meaning, he can do almost anything now and not erode his legend. The cool thing about Prince is that, he is releatively young to be getting all this "legendary" acclaim. How many artists are still pioneering as they are being put into the hall of fame??? Not many.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

i do think he can have it both ways at this point. i think that especially after last year, it's true - he has achieved 'legend' status - it's kinda like when you think of stevie wonder, you don't think of him as a has-been or as washed-up because he hasn't had a big hit in the last few years, or because his album's taking forever to come out...he's stevie freakin' WONDER, and he can do what he wants because he's already built a strong foundation as a legendary musician and songwriter. i think prince has attained that foundation, even if the cement's still a little wet. if prince wants to go do some freaky shit or get all beatnik and obtuse on us, or release more jazz albums and not talk to anyone for a long stretch of time again, or whatEVER, he can do it, and even if it doesn't strike a chord with the mainstream, he's proven that if he wants, he can play the superstar/music legend card to get the attention and the money.

maybe prince will be one of those artists who's able to marry a cult-artist sensibility and ethic with a mainstream-artist appeal and durability.
