I just read this morning in the National Enquire that comes in the Sunday paper, an interview the the notorious American Idol judge Simon. He made a comment on Prince and Madonna that i don't know how to read, so i'll ask y'all's oppinion. He said that they both have a 50-year career span b/c their songs stand the test of time; the old ones. However, he said that they r both obsessed with pumping out their new music, and that when ppl go to see them in concert, no one wants to hear the new stuff. Do u agree or disagree? i am kinda caught in the middle. they both have the right to perform their new stuff. but i think that a concert should have a mix with old and new. what do u think?

C'mon guys we're comparing apples and oranges. It's like comparing Jimi Hendrix with Milli Vanilli!! American Idol's Simon falls into that latter category! In fact, I met and even jammed with some the actual musicians and singers from Milli Vanilli. Their producer, Frank Farian (Far Corporation and Boney M) operated in the same manner. Simon simply took over where Frank left off in the European "Pop Music" scene. Prince artistically and musically stands heads and shoulders above the rest! Personally, I'd take his worst song created today over such "here today and gone 2morrow cookie cutters!" As far as Simon sez is concerned, this is the same guy who dissed Beyonce, calling her talentless and non-attractive, yet defended the lip-syncing of the talentless Ashley Simpson, calling her one of the better pop acts of her generation! So, I don't tend to take what he says seriously!

well for me, unless a new album has been released first, then I would accept he played a whole concert with just new songs. But if i'm hearing it for the first time, i'd probably feel lost, unless the songs are funky like his hits from the past that i never get tired of hearing on wax or live...
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

The only song I want to hear is the glorious music of Simon Cowell getting kicked out of a 30th story window. Mainly because I have a feeling he would make Tony M. cry.

I have to agree with Simon. As an ardent Prince fan, I loved it when I saw the "Ultimate Live Experience" tour back in 1995 because it was all new material, and for a fanatic like me it was genuinely exciting. But when you go to a concert you really want to hear songs you already know as well, so you can sing along, join in, get involved and so on. How many times have you been at a concert, somebody on stage says "here's a song from our new album" and there is an immediate exodus of people heading for toilets and bars? Sure, we're *interested* in hearing new stuff, but it's the old stuff, the songs that hooked us in the first place, that still give us that kick up the pants and make the hair on the back of our necks stand on end.

Should a concert be *all* old songs? No. You do need a mixture. I've been to concerts where the act has alternated old / new / old / new all night, and this has been fine, and I've also seen shows where they have started and finished with a barrage of old songs, but had a few new ones in the middle, and this has worked too. An artist needs to try to please as many people as possible, and no matter what they do there will always be some disappointed people ("They didn't sing {insert song here}!") but by playing plenty of what people know, you're kind of thanking them for sticking around and being there.

You know, Simon has been hatin' on Prince for quite some time now.

O.K., so I've asked this question several times, but I'll ask it again:

Why single out Prince?? Doesn't EVERY artist go through a so-called "peak period," where they experience the height of their career, never to be matched again? Come on, now, EVERY artist--including the Beatles and Stevie Wonder--have a cache of songs that people want to hear over and over again...and reject their new material. When at a Sting concert, you bet he'd better play some Police records. Even last Sunday at the Super Bowl: what if McCartney had come out there playing something from his new album rather than older material?

Again, why do people seem to hold Prince to a higher standard? They call him a has-been who needs to make a comeback because he ain't sellin'. But REALLY, EVERY artist goes through this...

I can't help thinking, Simon Cowell produces lots of one hit wonders, he has never had a band or artist that has lasted any length of time, so he can hardly talk, none of his artist have any good album material, they haven't any choice but to play the hits!

He's a totally obssessed with the moment and hits and popularity, of course he'd say something like that.

Point well said!!!
come to think about you baby you are my only need
