If I Was the Man In U'r Life This was one of the songs that jumped out at me right away off of Musicology. I just finally put it in with one of my playlists on my media player for the 1st time, and holy shamolly does this little gem stand out from the rest of the mix! After hearing the song in this context, I have no doubt that this song would have been huge on the radio if P was given any airtime, or if it was recorded 'as is' by any of the flavor of the month artists that are jamming the chart these days. What's the use of being young if you ain't gonna get old

My favorite song on Musicology. I wish it were a little longer, with a blazing quitar solo.

I love that one too. I think my favorite is "Call My Name" though. I think all of the songs are strong enough to stand on their own in the charts. My kitty wants to play...

One of my favorites too. However, I cannot think of it independently from The Marrying Kind, which leads into IIWTMIYL nicely.

It's a good song, but despite what fans like to think, I still don't see a single song off Musicology that would've had a chance to be a hit.
Maybe a remixed version of ICP&C, but as for the original songs off the album, none of them would chart. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Yeah. In my opinion Marrying Kind is the better of the two. Great song. "That's when I'm going to lay her 'cross my piano stool and.....SING to her" "Life is just a party and parties weren't meant to last"

I would definitely prefer it over all those "A Million Days" rumors I kept hearing most of the year. It truly does stand out... Ooh, little darlin' if you're

I agree, it is my favorite on Musicology. Prince should of relesed that song insted of Cinnomon Girl.

It really is a crime that this one isn't longer. He needs to REALLY do a throwback & release a 10 minute extended version!!!

Maybe a remixed version of ICP&C, but as for the original songs off the album, none of them would chart. Agreed. The production on Musicology sounds dated. It was the first time I listened to a Prince album and thought "shit, he could really do with an outside producer glossing over some of these." I think a handful of the tracks had hit potential (ICP&C and WDUWMTD mainly). They're well-crafted songs but there's nothing interesting going on in terms of production. You know the kinda stuff I'm talking about... the erotic moan Prince does at the beginning of When Doves Cry, the drums at the end of Sign O The Times... even to more recent years... the audio loops of Poet 99 on tracks like Face Down and Joint 2 Joint. A lot of the tracks on Musicology sound like demos IMO.

No. They don't sound like "demos". They are deliberately stripped-down productions. There's a very big difference. And that has nothing to do with sounding "dated" either - the snare drum used on "Purple Rain" sounds "dated", Tony M's raps sound dated, a lot of the production of "Graffiti Bridge" sound dated. In fact, whenever you try to reach for some type of commerciality or polishment, as so to speak, the music usually ends up sounding dated after a said number of years. This has more to do with the recording industry in general than the actual pieces of music themselves. Having said that "If I Was The Man In U'R Life" would have been a hit only with more polishing and more up-to-date production. The vocals would need more editing as well, no radio programmer today would play Prince's yelps and uncontrolled peaks. Thank God he left them in the mix though.

Firstly, quit presenting your opinion as fact. It's incredibly annoying and arrogant. Secondly, I stand by my statement that "Musicology" sounds dated. Not in the same way Tony M's raps sound dated though. A track like "I,C,P&C" for example, could've been his biggest hit in years - if only the production was bought into the twenty-first century. The pizzicato-style bass line which runs throughout the chorus makes it extremely dated sounding. And I think the chorus would have a lot more oomph if he added some layered vocals. I would love to see a Timbaland remix of that track. I'm sure Tim could've fulfilled the potential that it did actually have. Some of them are obviously stipped-down productions as you said, which is often a safe (and sometimes boring in the case of "Musicology") way of ensuring that your songs aren't shrouded in tacky over-production in years to come ("Thunder" anybody?). But IMO, although the drum machines and synths used on the "1999" album may sound dated in 2005, it remains a far more interesting and innovative record for having used them - two words that could never be ascribed to "Musicology." I had given Musicology a couple of listens and that was it,
I saw this post yesterday and thought "What the heck, let me give it one more listen", And lo and behold, I really like "If I was the Man in Your Life" and "The Marrying Kind"! Now I cant stop listening to these 2 songs, as well as "A Million Day". What happened??? Hmmm, Who knows, but I am actually beginning to really enjoy this album Thanks WDREW

I know that I sound like a broken record about this stuff to some people, but this song and several others on Musicology would do very well on the charts. This song especially would probably do very well on Urban radio stations, and would definitely crossover into the Top 40. Even without a video it would at least break into the Urban chart. In fact, forget the videos and just release the singles. It'll work. However, once again, the unwillingness to release the right singles to the right markets has me scratching my head. Too bad.

I'm talking about the top 40 chart that makes a song a hit. MattyJam, you have NO idea how much I agree with you. You hit it dead on about Musicology. They're very well crafted songs, but the production is completely lifeless, dated and boring. Really tarnishes the album. If Prince had used a good co-producer on this album, it might've been depressing but it also would've made this album his best in years.
