I love this track and also didn't realize as a child that it was something filthy. I had an inkling, tho. Even the original seems obvious, but if you listen to the extended dance cut, it has Prince's production and writing style all over it. From the term "Sugar Walls", to the slow buildup of instrumentation in the track, the Linn Drum, the synths, and the guitar playing. His vocals are in the background as well.
