nah, the DVD has both versions. i chose to watch the "extended" version...i just had no idea it was extended by three hours!  and while some of the re-editing of some of the scenes is kind of clunky, it seems like they made an interesting decision to add 'deleted scenes' into a version of the film that was already longer than the theatrical cut...i think. 
all i know is, what i saw was LONG. but it was good. i liked it.ahhh, ic..i bought it last night but opted to watch Ellen instead....glad to hear they offer both options... oh, and to whomever mentioned Diana Ross' film career..Her dissappearance from films has more to do with the state of Hollywood then the flop that was The Wiz.. think about it, Diana Ross, Dianne Carroll, Lynn Whitfield, Cicely Tyson, Alfre Woodard, Angela Bassett, Whoopie Goldberg and Pam Grier..these are our most talented (and all at different points in their careers the most bankable) black actresses in hollywood...after they all reached a certain age they all dissappeared from the big screen...and *thats* a shame...Once again I would like to point out that Oprah has enough clout and capital to change things...but instead she shulks about Beloved flopping and keeps herself at a distance from hollywood....Sista Girl, create a studio...YOU HAVE THE VISION AND TALENT TO DO IT!! Do it for the above women for christ sake and stop giving away free shit to your mostly white middleclass audiences... Space for sale... | |

I think that both films are good, you have to look at how Purple Rain is an older film and how they really didn't have some of the things they had today. also, they are about different things so that might have something to do with it. All in all, I don;t know which is better, different times, different kind of music, it;s really not that simple just to choose one, but if you were to choose based on which one had the best music, I'd say.....I have no idea, sorry. We just watched Ray last nite and debated but eventually decided to watch the "theatrical" version. THANK GOD. I enjoyed the movie and thought Jamie Foxx was amazing. But as it was I felt like the movie was too long. And I agree with whoever said it ended weirdly. It was like they just gave up and ended the film. It was awkward and disappointing. That said, i don't know how to compare it to PR. I guess I could say it was a btter film, although I enjoy PR more... | |

Elaine Madsen, the mother of Virginia and her brother Michael (who played Bill's brother Budd in "Kill Bill Vol. 2), is a Chicago writer and movie critic. She tells me: "We got the happy news a few days ago. And although you have said so kindly 'if there's any justice' Virginia will win, as far as we're concerned, justice happened with that nomination. This puts Virginia on the A-list. I think the actual question is which do you like better. There's no comparison. Ray is the better movie. Better actors, a better director, a much much better script. Purple Rain as a movie didn't even get Oscar/Golden Globe consideration. The soundtrack is what got it an Oscar. I prefer Purple Rain because it hit closer to home for me. Ray is a better movie in the "moviemaking" sense. | |

I am not a big fan of Miss Ross but you have got to give her credit. I agree...Diana kicks ass in that film! Her best movie ever.I think she even won a Grammy nomination for that role? | |

I know which one I'd sit through again (and again), and which one I wouldn't. Just watched Ray last night -- Foxx is amazing, and if he doesn't win an Oscar, I now think Rock should open a can of whoopass. But....the movie can't rise above the usual biopic problem: How do you shape a life-story into a compelling narrative arc? The movie just kind of rambles in places, and there's some oddly 40s-movie, melodramtic dialogue, and the end, as people have mentioned, is just strange. But it's still worth watching. PR, on the other hand, is glorious camp, and just a whole lot of stupid fun. |
