Prince and Tony M.

Hello!
everyone here seems to have at least the mutual respect for what i think is the awesome Diamonds and Pearls. But most ppl don't like Jughead or Tony M. i don't understand. In my personal opinion, i like Tony and the song. So what was the deal w/ Prince and Tony anyways? i heard several rumors that Tony was upset with P cuz he tried to have "street cred." please explain this to me.
yes, i'm still kinda a 'newbie" so scorne all u want. just wondering

thanks! biggrin

try and look for the picture of Tony M and Prince by the pool in their
swimsuits. and notice the high heels at the side of the pool.

it should be in the org gallery somewhere.

Tony M was a Ice T wannabe! Prince wanted to get his black audience back, because he lost it. Black people didnt understand Prince anymore. With the glam look and the psychedelic music. Prince was to weird. Also Eric Leeds said "Prince began listening to rap and said 'I can do that, and I can do it better.'" The Game Boyz, three old school breakdancers and rappers in Minneapolis, Tony Mosley, Kirk Johnson and Damon Dickson. they were extras in Purple Rain, on Jungle Love, and in the Glam Slam video, they started with Prince's new band the New Power Generation on the Nude Tour in 1990 and Diamonds And Pearls in '91.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

Tony was a sweet Heart! I think he added a bit of fun and funk to the band.
It was fun to watch he and Prince and Damin and Kirk Dance!
I danced with Tony and "Glam Slam" "Erotic City" that they had every weekend
up stairs. We talked a long time. He was very friendly and
when I saw him a few nights later he waved to me and gave me a BIG
smile.
I just think he and Prince had a falling out.. no big deal..

I'm glad to see someone speak so highly of Diamonds and Pearls. Tony's better than most of today's rappers.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

One thing you can say about Tony M, he never seemed over-awed in Prince's presence. His job was to act like a cocky, self-confident pimp bad-ass, and he played that role really well.

At the end of the day, he was a construction of Prince, so if you don't like Tony M, you're just critising Prince's decisions.

that, whomever be the culprit, they mixed poorly at best. diamonds and pearls
suffers greatly from the Tony M input and I guess you can't blame Tony for that
entirely. After all, it was Prince's album and he wanted Tony on it.

anyway, the Gangster Glam video and those pool pics just kind of materialise
what it is I found so horrible about the Tony M period. Prince was so silly
at the time. Even more so than usual

I really loved the Tony M years, and Diamonds and Pearls is one of my most favorite records. Tony brought street to the project and I think a lot of people here don't dig Tony because he is Black, (I am not trying to get anything started) but anytime the subject of Rap comes up the hating starts. Prince is a Genius, he can do everything, so why wouldn't he do rap and R & B and he is also Black, so to denie his roots is just plan ole lame. (some will say I am wrong but when Prince did Avalanche and said Abe Lincoln was a racist all the racist came out of the closet and started attacking him. why? My guess is because you want him to be a little white boy, and for him to be black, you are loving a black dude and that just will not do. I am Hawaiian, so call me names, don't bother me. Prince is the greatest musician in the 20th century, and 21th. Why? because he can do it all. and no one else that I know can do it like him. When you say Tony M ruined the NPG, you are just a hater. Last time I checked it was 2005, racism should have died long time ago.
How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

I'm one of the few people around here who actually liked Tony M. boxed

I like his contributions to the 'Diamonds and Pearls' and 'Love Symbol' albums.I miss that era.

i quite like his rap at the end of Willing and Able.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!
