Goldnigga

I never see anything about this album. Is this really a Prince CD or did NPG put out a separate album? Is it good? Does anyone own it? Where can I get it?
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

its npg, is good bad whatever. its from a 'black man's perspective'. its another prince involvement.
tony has a few things to say (rap) - same thing but syncopated - ironic..which is what rap is anyway.

technically over compressed.

Bad cd. Very bad. There is reason why Exodus saw the Light of day.

There is some great stuff on Gold Nigga. Black MF In The House is one of Prince's funkiest tracks period.

01. Gold nigga (Pt. 1)
02. Guess who´s knockin´(first pressing only)
03. Oilcan
04. SEGUE
05. Deuce & a quarter
06. SEGUE
07. Black M.F. in the house
08. Gold nigga (Pt. 2)
09. Goldie´s parade
10. SEGUE
11. 2gether
12. SEGUE
13. Call the law
14. Johnny
15. SEGUE
16. Gold nigga (Pt. 3)
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

it was a great album...released by the NPG - but with most of it a result of P...first 16-track version was withdrawn due to a copyright issue with the second track...reissued in a 15-track version and only sold via his shops...to get an original of either you are looking at scouring ebay and paying out $100-plus...double that if you want the original.

Be warned, though, lots of boots out there claiming to be the real thing - including a 21-track boot with the 2together maxi single tracks added on...

It's a very broken album, too many pointless segues, the whole Tony M. thing has dated very badly, but you still get some great material:

Deuce & 1/4 and the 2 short instrumentals are the best things on there.

Plus, Call The Law (Money Don't Matter b-side) and the pop single 2gether.

Johnny and Black MF are also commendable - and seeing as everything else is a segue, well you have a pretty decent related artists decent album, don't you. biggrin

If you like Tony M's rapping on Diamonds & Pearls and the Symbol album, you'll probably like this.

I'm sure Prince had a lot to do with the album, but you only hear his voice on 2 tracks.

Sounds nothing like the far superior Exodus album - mainly because Tony M isn't the lead vocal on that album.

It was put out by Prince's NPG records and only sold directly by him, so that's why it is fairly rare and therefore expensive.

I own it. Johnny is funny and funky. Prince sings that song. "Every time I see u my johnny get hard." Black M.F.'s In The House is great! The other songs are just Tommy M rappin'. Prince wanted to release Goldnigga in 1993 on his Paisley Park label with Warner Bros. Warner Bros wouldnt release the Goldnigga CD. Goldnigga is the album that started his war with Warner Bros in 1993.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

How did he have a copyright dispute on his own album? Or am I just stupid?

It was the Warner Bros contract dispute. Warner Bros didnt want a new album. Carmen Electra's album sold very porely. Warner Bros didnt think Goldnigga with Tony M rapping would sell. All Warner Bros wanted to release from Prince was a greatest hits album: The Hits. Prince wanted out of the contract after Warner Bros refused to release Goldnigga. They said "Your name is on the contract." So Prince changed his name to try and get out of the contract and release his music like Most Beautiful Girl in '94 and NPG Exodus in '95 on his own NPG Records.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

The only difference between the original version and the newer version is the ommission of the song Guess Who's Knocking.

With or without that song, I really don't know how you can say it is similar to the NPS album, they are poles apart if you ask me. On NPS there's no Tony M singing, it is all Prince, there are no segues, no proper rapping, no recurring themes - and is completely different musically.

In my opinion, all 3 NPG albums are completely different from each other. If Prince's idea was to create a band with it's own identity, he completely mucked it up by changing personnel and sound and then killed it completely by just doing the last album himself!

I'm just interested in what it is, exactly, that makes you think these 3 albums sound similar. I can't hear it, but I'm willing to be persuaded if you can back up your view with valid points.

i reckon in particular gold nigga and exodus are very similar ie stoopid segues etc granted nps doesnt have the segues , but all 3 are very funky albums ie; ,..

johnny
black mf in the house

exodus has begun
return of the bumpsquad
get wild

freaks on this side
push it up
mad sex

theres a kinda funky groove running through the albums. again ,..... i aint trying to validate my opinion or change yours ! its just an opinion , no need to persuade or change other peeps opinions !!!

I’m not very fond of the albums released in the 90’s ...
There no concept at all ... just a couple of songs are put together on every album (a few songs too many in my opinion ... there are far too many weak songs)

But Goldnigga is very enjoyable and it’s a real album: the songs fit together ... there’s almost a concept.
It’s strange ... but it’s one of the few albums released after LoveSexy that I play once in a while!
although I hate Tony ... I still enjoy this album.

Yes, I own the original release.

Good effort, I see what you're saying. You have picked the 3 darker funk tracks from NPS and the tracks from Goldnigga where Prince is most audible - yeah, I think if you put those all on one cd, they wouldn't sound too out of place with each other.

biggrin
