The song was huge in my area.It was played regularly on at least three of our R&B stations.I've always felt that,if Prince had released the video to MTV and BET,this song would have been his biggest hit in years.

I am in Detroit and I totally missed that. I don't even recall it even being played on the radio. I didn't hear about that song until I started visiting the org last year. I must admit that I had stop listening to P around '88-'89. But it is a mystery why I don't remember I Hate U. I was talking to my 22 year old sister about P one day and she mentioned that she used to love I Hate You and she was only in junior high at the time. eek

It just depended on what stations you were listening to. FM 98 played it for a while, so did 107.5 at that time I think it was still WGPR, I know because that was me calling in and requesting it. Of course Mojo wasn't on the air anymore then because had he been, I wouldn't have had to request it. Mojo would have had it bumping every night!!

*****

Damn, this post got me to reminiscing about Mojo, now I'm about to cry!! bawl Where my Detroiters at? Remember the "Midnight Funk Association"? bawl Who was listening the night Prince called him up and did the live interview, June 6, 1986, right? bawl What about The Mothership? Did it ever land on Belle Isle? bawl

Sorry, about the thread jackin', it's late, I'm bored, I'm supposed to be working. Back in the day it was Mojo and Prince that use to get me through nights like this.
[Edited 2/2/05 23:04pm]

I feel your pain about Mojo. bawl He played the hell out of Prince. I don't remember the on air interview, but I do remember that Mojo showed Prince a tremendous amount of love. Prince shouted Mojo out one of the shows at the Palace last year. Mojo played every released single, extended version, b-side and even unreleased single. He had so much freedom to play whatever he wanted to play.I trip thinking about how the radio stations got away with playing Horny Toad and Irresistible B!tch back then. I miss those days. sad
I need to find a time machine quick before I lose it. fit bawl

hug PurpleCharm, if you ever find one, Org note me. I'd gladly take a trip back to when Mojo ruled the airwaves!

Dearest Mojo, if you should ever peep this, and you want get back on the airwaves but hate what it's become! Sirius Satellite Radio is the way to go. Just ask Howard Stern. Detroit really needs you, man!! bow

A quick breakdown, for the interested, on "I Hate U" on the Billboard charts. It debuted on the Hot 100 at no.56 due to street-date violations for the cd/cassette single. The following week, with a full week of sales, it rocketed to no.13. It entered the sales chart at no.6, fueling that 56-13 leap, but stalled at no.46 on the airplay chart. The next week it inched to no.12, then fell to no.19. Airplay dried up and sales didn't last. In all, it spent only 5 weeks in the top 40 and 10 weeks on the Hot 100. It did receive a lot of R&B airplay, which is why it reached no.3 on that chart and spent 20 weeks on the survey. "I Hate U" broke Prince's streak of having at least one top ten pop single every year, from 1983-1994. It came sooo close...

Similar situation with "TGRES." It reached no.19 on the sales chart, which was good enough for no.63 on the main Hot 100, but zero airplay kept it from making the top 40.

For those who don't know, the Billboard Hot 100 is a combination of sales and airplay. Labels more or less stopped releasing commercial cd singles by the end of the 90s, so it's essentially an airplay chart these days. But the forthcoming inclusion of digital single sales will balance it back out again. So if Prince released an exclusive new song like "Glass Cutter" to i-Tunes, and all of us purple junkies bought it, he could very well be back in the top 40 someday soon.

Very interesting. Thanks.
Wonder when this "digital singles sales" inclusion will be put into effect.

I wonder the same thing. I don't remember this song either. I am originally from Toledo, OH and now live in Detroit. I don't remember hearing I hate U on either station. I did remember Shhh! but I am pretty sure it was TEvin Campbell's version.
If I heard either of these from GE, I would have bought the CD back then. I really think P was black balled from radio during the prince days.

Gosh i do remember the mothership landing. Mojo was out of this world! I was in Toledo and couldn't always pull Detroit on my radio. But that was when detroit radio was cool. now clear channel got what 2 out 3 black radio stations?

I got this from this website:
http://www.dtt-lyrics.com...s/alt.html

From the "I Hate U" Extended Remix:

I hate U, baby
Like a day, like a day without sunshine
Cuz U're all, U're all, U're all that's ever on my mind
Baby, baby, baby, how am I gonna get along on a lonely night?
Oh tell me, girl, tell me, girl, why didn't U keep your panties on tight? (Ooh)
Ask me if I care, ask me if I care
It's so little it's like that feather in Forrest Gump
Floatin' through the air, floatin' through the air until the bus comes
I hate U - Can I get a transfer?

I absolutely LOVE this remix...it is easily one of my all time favourites..

" U gave a dog a place to bone, and now U´re ass is all alone. I hate U ! "

Classic Prince...

" U danced for a dollar....!I know he didn´t make U holler, and if he did
it wasn´t like the time we did it to Mahler.
Don´t U remember U were my little nasty girl,
mine and U never felt the need to lay another down, so now,
I frown at the sound of U´r very name.."

man, that´s deep..... lol
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I know Green Day's "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" jumped from 8 to 4 because of the added downloads. This is from the Feb. 4 edition of Chartbeat Bonus by Fred Bronson on Billboard.com:

"HOTTER THAN HOT: The introduction of the Pop 100 is not the only major change this week. New methodology is introduced to the Hot 100, which now includes sales of digital downloads whether a retail single exists or not. Titles no longer have to appear in the top 75 of the Hot 100 Airplay chart before they can appear on the big chart.

The change in formula shakes up the chart, but not at the top, where Mario's "Let Me Love You" (3rd Street/J) continues at to rule for the seventh week. Beneficiaries of the new methodology include Kelly Clarkson, who becomes the first "American Idol" to have two entries in the top 10 -- "Since U Been Gone" (RCA) at No. 9 and "Breakaway" at No. 10 -- and the Killers, who have the highest new entry of 2005 as "Mr. Brightside" (Island) bows at No. 40."

I don't know why they didn't "release" it.

I heard it quite a bit on Chicago radio. I remember being so surprised to hear a NEW Prince song on the radio. lol

I don't remember which station just that they had Tom Joyner and another dj that I really liked that later went into nationwide syndication.

They played "The Hits and Dusties."
I'm firmly planted in denial

I'll never forget being on the hiway at the end of a long trip, driving up to downtown Philly at 2 in the morning for a convention, turning on the radio and catching the debut of "I Hate U.'' That song was hot, complete with courtroom, "Your Honor, may I call to the stand, my one and only witness'' etc.
I know it was a hit then, but not how big of a hit.
But I'll never forget the first time I heard it.
Sweet.

Obviously I'm in a major minority here but I find the song extremely cheesy! The whole Courtroom bit makes me cringe, (see also TMBGITW and International Lover). I must have a thing about talking in songs.

Just my opinion.

I did some research on the single and its respective airplay and sales numbers. It peaked on Billboard's Hot 100 airplay chart at #46, but at #6 on the sales chart. On the R&B airplay and sales charts, the peak numbers are more even at #3 on both charts so R&B stations nationwide were giving it lots of airplay.

That's similar to a classic "rap" that a lot of old R&B songs used to have where the singer just broke it down and talked to the listener. There was a whole thread recently about those songs. http://www.prince.org/msg/8/131963 I'm guessing you'll hate each and every one of them. smile
