I always wonder about that. But in the video when this line comes on the TV set shows a guy that looks like a George Michael clone. So I think Dire Straits is picking on George Michael NOT Prince.


Dire Straits aren't picking on anyone. The line is sarcastic. It is written from the viewpoint of a person who is jealous because they have to work hard for just a little money when rock stars have the easy life and tons of money, hence Money for Nothing. Can people really hear this song and not understand that. That's really surprising because that's the whole basis of the song.

A side note: Sting sings backup and co-wrote the song
Also Dire Straits (particularly Mark) KICK ASS
