Who ever said that line was about Prince? If anything, I think the line (and the song) in fact is meant to be making fun of people who think like that. So it's actually just kind of snobby rather than homophobic.

I thought it was written with Elton John in mind. Hence "that's his own hair" was doubly ironic!

Let's not forget that the lyrics are being "sung" by some very un-PC, working-class dudes delivering appliances who were fantasizing about being rock stars...

"Why him and not me? He's as ugly as I am!" 80s videos very much followed this rule: the uglier the rock star, the more beautiful the girls accompanying him.

"Money for Nothing" is an all-time great classic video.

Yeah, in the video the working class dudes are referring to the Dire Straits video playing up on the wall. So Dire Straits are taking the mickey out of themselves as much as anything, I don't see that line is necessarily about Prince, there where a lot of androgynous popstars around in the 80's, it's a general tongue-in-cheek comment. Much like Prince's line, "That skinny motherf**ker with the high voice?!"

Someone told me the same thing, that the song was about Prince, but after I heard Mark Knopfler talk about it I realized that it was just a general anti-rock-star-from-the-point-of-the-working-class song.

I don't remember Prince having his own airplane...that makes me think it's not about him. If that line wasn't there, it might very well be about Prince.

I have thought it could have been about P, MJ, any of the glam rockers, etc. but I think Dire Straits were singing from the perspective of an appliance delivery guy who works hard and resents the easy celebrity enjoyed by less-manly folk.

Heck, folk from LL Cool J to Talking Heads took shots/parodies at P in the 80's.

I read an article on Mark Knofler & he said the line was written by: overhearing two guys talk about a DURAN DURAN video.

I always wonder about that. But in the video when this line comes on the TV set shows a guy that looks like a George Michael clone. So I think Dire Straits is picking on George Michael NOT Prince.

How do these things get started? It's definitely about George Michael. Look at the video and listen to the lyrics. Most great guitar players like Knopler,Clapton, etc... love Prince. They were also label mates at the time.
