Why is Prince underground?

Either his religion is getting real scary or the boy is just having issues with creating any new stuff. Maybe the Elders are telling him to steer clear of all us infidels. Whatever it is, I sure miss that little turkey.

Maybe his creative well has dried up. Sad thought.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Anxiety

huh? he just ended his biggest tour ever last fall, his album is up for five grammies, and a musicology live DVD is supposed to be dropping this spring with a new album this summer. and since the beginning of his career, he's released a new album yearly, with very few exceptions...are you confusing him with maybe sly stone or j.d. salinger?

For what's it worth, I really believe that Prince has always had sort of a cult following. You always come across what I refer to as "fly by night fans," those people who only want to hear the hits, particularly Purple Rain and that's it. If previous and subsequent works lack Purple Rain-qualities, then they immediately dismiss it. I think many, many Prince fans are "fly by night" fans. The true fans generally can't wait for new stuff and try as they might to get unrealeased and hard to find recordings, collectibles, and other things...

Prince has never, and will never, be in the realm of the Madonnas or the Britney's - but is that such a bad thing?

Of course he is in NO way an underground or niche artist - he is mainstream, if left-field, but he is not underground.

I agree. The vast majority of the people at his concerts just go to see the strange little guy be...strange. These people only buy Purple Rain and left the rest alone.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

You're right about that. It just feels that way sometimes. With the whole bootleg market, he has a strong underground vibe with those in the know... u know.. the infidels.
Come here, babe.. yeah...

Underground? Did you go into a coma sometime in 2003 only to wake up just now?

You don't have anything else to do (LOL). Maybe P is working. I am not sure what that has to do with the Elders.

nice pic! batting eyes

and about being a fly by night fan.... Fams may not want to hear this but in order to get the $$ from record sales in order to make the more creative (albeit non popular) work, you need the masses of "fly by night fans". What I respect about Prince is that he doesn't change in order to seek out those fly by night fans. Sometimes his creative work strikes a chord across the board.
Over the years he has kept that ethic, and now it is paying off, his PEERS (other well known musicians) are giving him props because he earned it.

It just seems to me that the original poster about fly by night fan was being a little condescending because he is a true fan who goes to all the concerts, and buys up all the bootleg material.
