Prince & Wendy: "Reflection" If you saw the Tavis Smiley TV performance from last year did you happen to notice the look Prince gives Wendy during their performance when he sings "I wanna play you this old song / it's about love"? He totally nails it. When some of the female fans on this site woo over him (and why not some of the male fans as well), I can certainly understand where it's coming from. I mean who else would have the audacity to look anybody like that - on national broadcast - yet come off so totally sincere? Think he really meant it too.
Sure, he probably had planned that little look beforehand, but who cares? Prince is one of the very few individuals on the planet who can come off totally heartfelt when doing something as pretentious as that. I wonder if his non-fans caught that moment as well, or was it just something for us, the no-life-die-hards to relish on? Man, I could literally feel the mid-80s being revisited!

It was a great moment in a very great performance.
....the bottom note of the phrase still bugs me, in a good way. It sounds like it's not in the same key..... The bit I love most about the performance is when he sings, "Sometimes I just wanna go out - u know me - play my guitar..."
He turns to Wendy just as he's saying 'u know me', and smiles. That captures the nostalgia (in a good way) that is central to the song so perfectly.

miguel!!!
i love the song and the performance as well. I was really feeling his performance. The way he sang, the way his voiced rose and fell so perfectly. It almost made me fall in love with him. When i hear the song, to me it feels like he is at another new starting point in his life and his career. [Edited 1/28/05 13:32pm] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I think that is one of Prince's best vocal performances I have ever seen; so comfortable and full of emotion, and his phrasing is killer!
Totally blows away the studio version, with that annoying click track.

I just went and watched it again, for the first time since I watched it that night. It literally brought tears to my eyes. Took me back to sitting there watching it, on the phone with TOFKA, neither of us making a sound, utterly breathless. Breathless.
Damn, Prince, you can still do that to me. The Normal Whores Club

I don't know if it was the reunion, the rapport, the song or everything together. What a perfect moment. It was just too damn short. Funkmistree, I agree with you. I only listen to the audio version of this song from the Tavis show.....now spank me hard. hehee Also the part "I was just thinking about my mother" kills me. I feel that. Totally blows away the studio version, with that annoying click track. The studio version does absolutely nothing for me at all. The Tavis version is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Strange how so many of his songs are better live than in the studio (I'm thinking 1+1, Somebody's Somebody, The ? of U, The One, Strollin...)

I heard this song for the first time on television, because I hadn't purchased Musicology yet. I immediately loved it, and knew that I had to buy the album asap. I would also love to see it released as a single as well.

I don't think it was pretentious at all. I believe he really loves Wendy as a person. He said she was the first person he thought about when it came time to do that performance. That says a lot after all this time. He respects her as a musician (his comment that nobody else plays acoustically with him the way she does was really sweet), and though they may not be best buds, he has love for her.

He turns to Wendy just as he's saying 'u know me', and smiles. That captures the nostalgia (in a good way) that is central to the song so perfectly. He actually says, "-you know what I'm talking 'bout". I think Wendy knew exactly what he was talking about.

It was a sweet moment, but the real reason he looked at her is because they were coming up on the first bridge change in the song and he wanted to be sure she was with him. He was signalling her and if you watch you can see she looks right down at her fretboard to finger the next change. They had very little time to rehearse for this performance together and it must have been a bit nerve wracking for both of them to pull it together after so many years apart...

I'm just going off a quote from Prince, either way, you seemed like you were trying to take from the thread by saying Mike Scott was asked first. End of the day all that matters is that Prince and WENDY performing together meant A LOT to A LOT of people.

I really don't give a fuck who he called first, all I can say is, on that performance, Wendy looked like she was home. Right where she belonged. I'll cherish this vid clip for the rest of my life. Keep your headphones on.
