"Just As Long As We're Together" and pretty much the rest of For You. Prince laboured over all the multitudes of sounds throughout that album.

CO-SIGN!!! You gotta listen to that album with the headphones to catch every sound

lets make a list of songs that must be heard on headphones. i was blown away the first time i heard automatic on headphones and i believe that is the only way to hear that song. i was wondering if any fellow orgers can name of any other songs that must be listen to on headphones to hear all the little backing tracks and sound that cant be heard any otherway

Then you don't have a pair of these hehe.

Of course it was a pair of headphones $150 Sennheiser's that made me believe in high end electronics. Before you listen to a cd on those, you've never heard cd quality sound. So good back in the day I had to listen to my whole cd collection over again. Pure joy. Now I've done away with needing headphones to get that quality and found it in high end pair of speakers. Pure joy for all to hear now, not just in my head.

The Number One song for headphones has to be GOD!

The whole thing is so atmospheric and when he sings the line "to rule the night" just gives you goose bumps on goose bumps!
In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

Tambourine. Whilst drinking kiwi/strawberry juice. At dawn. Oh, and with an (nascent) hangover, if possible.

i used to do this thing with my headphones - where i wouldn't plug them in all the way and my player would only play certain layers of the track. very cool way to hear ALL that Prince puts into his songs (back in the day). Emancipation was a great album to do this to!!

Outside of Prince music, Jeff Buckley's "Grace" album is a fantastic one to listen to on headphones! biggrin

agreeance thumbs up! funny, i just dug out my War CD a couple of weeks ago and threw on the phones.

Haven't finished reading the thread, but I'd add Call My Name (vocals are beautiful), Comeback and Until U R In My Arms Again. I can't listen to the last two without crying...the emotion in his voice is so raw. cry

That manipulation of the headphone plug is an interesting way to listen to music. It's basically phase cancellation that pretty much eliminates anything coming from the perceived stereo "center". What you're left with is hard left/right signal... lots of effects and overdub/rhythm elements that are not traditionally mixed to the center such as lead vocals and Bass guitar. There are also some plug-ins and studio devices that mimic this as well.

Anyhow, Lovesexy is a trip using this technique. Also try "Sister Fate" and hear the background vocals that you probably never knew Prince had in there!!!

Great topic. You are all right because all of his songs are incredible on head phones.
The first one I listened to on headphones was SOTT-and Adore blew me away:
"Well, maybe not the ride..."
His first two albums and Emancipation are also great to listen to on headphones.
Wait! I remember when I listened to all of 1999 on headphones back in the early 80s, and you are right, especially the second album with A-U-T-Omatic, LCD and the others.

Man! now I have to get my Bose on and listen!

The beautiful ones!!!!
Don't make me waste my time, don't make me lose my mind!!!
I don't have time to listen to new music, I've got too much old Prince to discover. Classic example : I was at club Nokia at the midnight show and didn't know "In a large room with no lights" . . . my bad Prince
