DO YOU THINK THE 2004 SUCCES IS DUE TO PRINCE DRESSING A LITTLE MORE HETEROSEXUAL AND LOOKING LIKE A PIMP
AND NOT LIKE AN ECCENTRIC ARTIST. I THINK HIM LOOKING COOL IN THOSE SWEET SUITS HELPED PEOPLE GIVE HIM A CHANCE AGAIN. THOSE ASSLESS PANTS LOST ME FOR A LITTLE WHILE

Prince hasn't dressed like an "eccentic artist" since 1995. Since the Emancipation era he's dressed a wee bit more PIMP like. anyhoo- I wouldn't exactly call Prince's fashion choices "hetero sexual". Brother has got more style than that. "New Power slide...."

well, if that's the case (which it isn't), he flushed it all down the toilet with that people's choice awards get-up.

CO-SIGN. And I also think most of his success was due to making good music..duh Doesn't it make you smile when you realize no one was there to see the stupid thing you just did?

It was timing. We're sick of what's on the radio. I think America was in the mood for one of the big stars to stir things up again, if only for nastalgic purposes. Maddonna put out a crappy ass album, and MJ--well, MJ can't be salvaged at this point. So it was up to Prince. He put out an relatively o.k. album (if you're not a Prince fan) and he did do any STUPID PR SUICIDE stunts. So, it worked. As for the way he dresses. Good Lord, that shit started with string bikinis and it's graduated to that silly hooded/madallion virgin mary getup--not good.

I thought it was due to him finally being added to the Hall Of Fame. Onion Juice appears courtesy of Streethop.com

What people? sicafints, posers, front runners, people who only own purple rain? The worst thing that could happen to prince would be mass appeal again.

The beauty of the success of 2004, is that financially Prince is set. (His money troubles have been widely discussed in recent years, with probably some level of truth). What this past year means is, he can comfortably be an underground artist without needing to appeal to the masses ever again. More website activity, smaller shows, and I believe, die-hard fan-centric activity will dominate this year and beyond. Consider the effects of 2004: He has more money than he will ever need. He has received huge kudos for the Musicology marketing stroke of genius. He has critical acclaim, and his image among the masses is secure. (The Musicology Tour would be a much better swan song than Rave, the name change, etc...), so now, I think he is freed up from the "respect" and record company battle issues that have plagued him. I believe 2004 is going to liberate him creatively. Mark this down...

I think we're in agreement. Consider the effects of an early 2005: Prince at the People's Choice Awards Prince at the Golden Globes Prince rumored to do this http://www.prince.org/msg/7/130970 Did people welcome him back? or did Prince come back with a great album, great tour and say I didn't fall; I'm back and better than ever. As much as I like seeing him in the media, I won't rejoice because the masses are welcoming him back cause' they like his suit or don't find him eccentric anymore. Did we ever wonder if his success was due solely to music? of course not, because we know it takes more than good music to appeal to the masses, it takes good marketing, duets with hot stars, talk shows and award show appearances...etc. What’s gonna be the popular consensus if or when P rejects his re-found commercial success and puts out an artistic album with his naked body on the cover. I hope he can comfortably be an underground artist and his need for money and appeal were a just reaffirmation of his genius If P's ego and pocket have been sufficiently filled; good, but I have yet to see him revert back to his base. (The same base who remained loyal when the masses left him for whomever they were marketed to.) See you at the oscars.... [Edited 1/26/05 20:38pm]

the 2004 tour of him playing the "oldies" that he may not ever play again didn't hurt either...

I think it has more to do with Prince cooperating and playing nice with the media and the corporations than how he's been dressing recently. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I think the success of 04 is do to Prince singin' with Beyonce at the Grammys and selling the Musicology CD with the ticket price! Prince didnt look eny more "normal" in 04, Prince always looks Glam and freaky. Prince always had a sleazy pimp look. The long trench coat look. Goodnight, sweet Prince.
