I asked my ma one time when we were in the kitchen cooking and talking, if Prince had any kids, and she told me she remembered he had one kid with Mayte. When I ask her more about the kid, she said that is all she knows. So, I decided to found out myself about Prince's child by searching the internet, and also asking my org freinds about it...I found out later on, that YES, he did have a child w/ Mayte, but I also found out that his child had a head deformity, and died, and that was all the info I got. I had no idea...found out also that it all happened in 1997!! I was not informed about that...Why I wasn't, don't ask, I had no idea. I find that strange, yet sad. I also find it very amazing that Prince coped well and kept it hidden to himself, except in his music. I felt alot of sympathy for Prince and Mayte. No wonder they broke up after, I guess.

Can anyone tell me exactly what went wrong and what you guys remember through interviews and stuff, if you can?? If So, thanks alot, really.

Yeah, their little boy (I believe) died from birth defects. Prince was on Oprah at the end of '96 and would not say that the baby had passed, but basicly said that they had plenty of time to have more kids. There were rumors for awhile that Mayte did drugs while she was preggers, but I seriously doubt it.

I think maybe once since then, in a Dutch interview, did he mention the passing of his child.

Maybe you have heard the song on Emancipation where he has the heart beat of the baby on the track....Seemed very excited. There was also the "Betcha by golly, wow" video...which has a very pregnant Mayte in it. I don't think she was photgraphed a whole lot while pregnant though.

All very sad....Also, very much talked about...How did you miss it?

This was a very sensitive subject with at the time. He refused 2 discuss the situation with almost everybody. He was very evasive when he did talk about it. If I recall, the only other person he talked 2 about it besides Oprah was Bryant Gumbel. Bryant just asked right out "Is the baby well", and simply said whatever happens he accepts, and if u leave things in God's hands u'll find the answer 2 the plan.

On a musical note, I've heard from many that "Until U're In My Arms Again" (from NPG's New Power Soul album) is about his late son. The bottom line is that his music and faith in God helped get him through it all.

there was a bit of controversy about how/when/why the baby actually died. it was born with "clover-syndrome" which, basically, the skull crushes the brain in to a clover shape. very tragic! nurses were under investigation as to who actually gave the order to pull the plug on the child. i believe the book "purple reign" touches on the subject. remember in the oprah interview, he gave a tour of paisly park, and showed a nursery room and oprah asked about the rumors about the birth defects....prince responded with something like, "dont b leive everything u hear." so even then he was downplaying it, im sure much like anyone in public eye would.
all in all, it IS a tough issue for prince (and mayte) as it would b 4 any expecting parents and may have been part of the reason 4 split. but we may never really understand....
